Downtime Alerting #2

Hello Hobbits,

my last post was perhaps simply overseen, because I can't believe, that
nobody knows something about my question. Or did I miss a chapter in the
Manual?

By using the "info" Column you can easily disable a System for a planned
downtime. However, I would like to inform a group a people about this
automatically by sending an eMail directly, when the Downtime is scheduled.
Is there a way to do so?

And is there a general way, to change the Look & Text of an Alert eMail?

You can try to use the keyword COLOR in hobbit-alerts.cfg for that host to match for BLUE, but you may also need to change hobbitserver.cfg (I think) to tell it that BLUE can be an alert-able condition (normally it is not).

You could look at the source, and you would realize that the answer to your first question is "no" and that the answer to the second question is "not unless you write a script to create and send the email yourself and call it for the alarms that you want to send email for..."

Greg,

thanks for the answer.
I'm not deep inside C Code, therefore, may I ask an additional question?

Do you see any possible ways, to enhance the code to allow a Downtime
alerting?
I'm thinking about something like "DTALERT=email1,email2" added to the
objects in the bb-hosts file and whenever a downtime is scheduled,
hobbit-enadis.cgi could perhaps trigger this to the alert?

With BigBrother, I did a lot of minor code changes and at the end, this
results in the situation, that I never update the software itself, because
I don't know, how to re-apply my changes. I have no experience with
patching and version-control and more than scripting is also not my cup of
tea. My concern is, if I do "private" changes to hobbit, I run in the same
situation...

Someone would have to write that. Your idea may be sound, but Henrik still "owns" the overall architecture. He is planning a big new release one of these days, and maybe you can see if he will add this to the wish list.

Hi Oliver,

Maybe I don't understand fully but can't you use the NOTICE rule
in the hobbit-alerts.cfg file to send an email? I've seen this
thread http://www.hswn.dk/hobbiton/2005/03/msg00282.html

Again if I'm off-base let me know

I could be wrong as well but I am using NOTICE and it doesn't seem to
trigger for a 'scheduled' disable. It only triggers if the enable/disable is
scheduled for 'now'.

It would definitely be helpful if it did though.

Hello,

I would like to implement Downtime alerting when a downtime is scheduled.
In our environment, we are working on an European level together.
Therefore, for some devices, we need to inform colleagues and third party
connections about a planned downtime. EG. if a VPN Router will not be
available for a while...

I'm thinking about an EXT Script to do downtime alerting right when the
planned downtime is scheduled.

It's like:
- Check scheduled Task list for entries
- Check internal file, if already informed
- Run against each entry in Task list, if not already informed
- Send eMail to receipt following alerting rules looking for "NOTICE" and
"NOALERT"
- Cleanup internal file for not valid entries (comparing the scheduled Task
list)
- If a not valid entry with date in future exists, send Alert to inform
about cancelled downtime
- Delete not valid entry
- Add new informed device and planned Downtime to internal file
- Exit

For a perl/bash scripting guy, this will be an easy task, however, I've
written my last perl Script in 2003... :-(, because most devices running MS
and I script more VBScripts...

Has anybody any hint for me?
