I was recently introduced to Hobbit when searching for a replacement for BB.

I have installed hobbit on an Ubuntu 7.04 server with almost no trouble
except for the fact that I don¹t have a website generating. Hobbit starts
with no errors and I see all of the processes running with a ps command. I
wait for about 5 minutes and bring up a web browser and I don't get a page.
At first I suspected I had made a mistake adding the alias's into the
apache2.conf but everything there seems to be in order. What is more
troubling to me is that when I check the www directory in my hobbit
installation it is empty.

hobbit at RESMACMGMT01:~/server/www$ ls -al
total 40
drwxr-xr-x 10 hobbit hobbit 4096 2007-05-25 13:55 .
drwxr-xr-x 9 hobbit hobbit 4096 2007-05-25 13:55 ..
drwxr-xr-x 2 hobbit hobbit 4096 2007-05-25 13:55 gifs
drwxr-xr-x 3 hobbit hobbit 4096 2007-05-25 13:55 help
drwxr-xr-x 2 hobbit hobbit 4096 2007-05-25 13:55 html
drwxr-xr-x 2 hobbit hobbit 4096 2007-05-25 13:55 menu
drwxr-xr-x 2 hobbit hobbit 4096 2007-05-25 13:55 notes
drwxrwxr-x 2 hobbit www-data 4096 2007-05-25 13:55 rep

drwxr-xr-x 2 hobbit hobbit 4096 2007-05-25 13:55 wml

So it looks to me that Hobbit simply isn't generating a web page at all. I
am brand new to hobbit so I really don't know what else to check.

Maybe modifying this line in your bb-hosts

From:

To:

10.70.55.227 RESMACMGMT01 # BBDISPLAY BBPAGER BBNET bbd

The problem seems to be something related to your servername/hostname,
try check your configuration files, comparing to the real
servername/hostname.

There should be a symlink in /var/www/html to the $BBHOME/server/www
directory (where your web pages are generated) underneath your Hobbit
install directly, typically /usr/local/hobbit.

The "listening on 0.0.0.0:1984" is normal.

Hobbit doesn't use the BBDISPLAY, BBPAGER , or BBNET variables in
bb-hosts. The 'bbd' tag will just cause Hobbit to check that either the
Hobbit daemon or the BigBrother daemon is running.

I suspect that all you need is the symbolic link I mentioned above. Check
your $BBHOME/server/www directory to make sure your pages are being
generated. The "hobbitd servername MACHINE='RESMACMGMT01' not listed in
bb-hosts, dropping hobbitd status" message will typically go away in a few
minutes as Hobbit gets its database built up. If you have the link, and
your pages are being generated and you still can't get the pages on your
browser your Apache configuration is messed up. Look at your Apache error
logs to get an idea of what's going on.

Thanks,
Larry Barber

Your Hobbit server thinks it's called RESMACMGMT01, but there's no
such host listed in bb-hosts. However, I don't think it has anything
to do with the missing webpages.
2007-05-25 15:16:13 Setting up network listener on 0.0.0.0:1984
This is normal, it means Hobbit will pick up status messages on
port 1984 - for any IP address associated with the Hobbit server.
2007-05-25 15:16:18 Task bbdisplay terminated, status 127
This is the problem. Status 127 usually means the "bbgen" command
won't even run. Is there anything at all in the bb-display.log file ?

What happens if you login as the Hobbit user, then runs
   bbcmd bbgen --recentgifs --subpagecolumns=2 --report

Hi Ben,

Try adding apache user to the hobbit group and see if it works, if not
change the user and group in the apache.conf file to user: hobbit
group: hobbit just to test, it seems to be access rights

apache2.conf but everything there seems to be in order. What is more
troubling to me is that when I check the www directory in my hobbit
installation it is empty.

hobbit at RESMACMGMT01:~/server/www$ ls -al
total 40
drwxr-xr-x 10 hobbit hobbit 4096 2007-05-25 13:55 .
drwxr-xr-x 9 hobbit hobbit 4096 2007-05-25 13:55 ..
drwxr-xr-x 2 hobbit hobbit 4096 2007-05-25 13:55 gifs
drwxr-xr-x 3 hobbit hobbit 4096 2007-05-25 13:55 help
drwxr-xr-x 2 hobbit hobbit 4096 2007-05-25 13:55 html
drwxr-xr-x 2 hobbit hobbit 4096 2007-05-25 13:55 menu
drwxr-xr-x 2 hobbit hobbit 4096 2007-05-25 13:55 notes
drwxrwxr-x 2 hobbit www-data 4096 2007-05-25 13:55 rep
drwxrwxr-x 2 hobbit www-data 4096 2007-05-25 13:55 snap
drwxr-xr-x 2 hobbit hobbit 4096 2007-05-25 13:55 wml

So it looks to me that Hobbit simply isn't generating a web page at
all. I
am brand new to hobbit so I really don't know what else to check.

First of all thanks for the help so far...looks like Henrik hit the nail on
the head here.

Have you checked your logfiles ? at /var/log/hobbit ?
This doesn't look good but I am not sure what it means...

Hobbitd.log:
2007-05-25 15:16:13 Setup complete
2007-05-25 15:21:14 hobbitd servername MACHINE='RESMACMGMT01' not listed in
bb-hosts, dropping hobbitd status
I have the following error message repeating over and over:
bbgen: error while loading shared libraries: libpcre.so.0: cannot open
shared object file: No such file or directory

Interestingly enough the file does exist so it must not be looking in the
correct location.
hobbit at RESMACMGMT01:~/server/bin$ ls -al /usr/local/lib/libpcre.so*
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root     16 2007-05-25 09:34 /usr/local/lib/libpcre.so ->
libpcre.so.0.0.1
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 16 2007-05-25 09:34 /usr/local/lib/libpcre.so.0
-> libpcre.so.0.0.1
-rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 232485 2007-05-25 09:34
/usr/local/lib/libpcre.so.0.0.1

Is there an environmental variable I can set to change this?
quoted from Henrik Størner
What happens if you login as the Hobbit user, then runs
   bbcmd bbgen --recentgifs --subpagecolumns=2 --report
Obviously no love with this command:
hobbit at RESMACMGMT01:~/server/bin$ ./bbcmd bbgen --recentgifs
--subpagecolumns=2 --report
2007-05-29 08:56:26 Using default environment file
/home/hobbit/server/etc/hobbitserver.cfg
bbgen: error while loading shared libraries: libpcre.so.0: cannot open
shared object file: No such file or directory

Now hobbitserver.cfg hints to the fact that you may be able to point to
libraries in the config file:
-snip-
# Some systems need extra settings e.g. to locate run-time libraries.
# You can add these extra settings here:
-snip-

Is this possibly what I am looking for to point to the libpcre.so.0 library?
If so what is the syntax for adding it?

Add
   LD_LIBRARY_PATH=/usr/local/lib
to hobbitserver.cfg, and restart Hobbit.

If it's a Solaris box, you can also use the "crle" utility to configure
the whole system to look in /usr/local/lib for runtime libraries.

Thanks Henrik, that worked like a charm.
