Hi All,
Does anybody know a way to test your ability to send mail externally? I want to be able to verify we can send mail to an external email server. Being able to check mail externally would be great also. Does anybody know of a test or script to do this?

thanks

k

Personally I'd use mailx from the command line on the Hobbit server:

     mailx -s "this is a test" user-f252d49614cf@xymon.invalid

then type in some random junk, followed by a single dot on a line of its
own. Check your logs for the outgoing message - depending on the OS, that
could be /var/log/syslog, /var/adm/messages, /var/log/mail, etc. Check the
email server to see if it arrived.

In a previous company I regularly sent an email to user-4e69ee32f46e@xymon.invalid -
they have kindly set up a service that will reply to you, so you can set
up a script that sends an email out, waits an amount of time (I used ten
minutes) and checks the in-box of the sending address.

When we had BB running, we had a script that would send a mail with an number to an external email address. The email was forwarded back to bbuser at ... and a procmail script keeps the monitor green oder yellow.

Now I'm counting the mails in/out/spam and could raise an alarm if there are no more spams arriving ;-))
