Xymon support sites

I think we need to revisit having two (or more) separate locations for people to go to get Xymon information and monitoring tools. Having different scripts in multiple places can just confuse people. Currently, The Shire (soon to be Xymonton) is the main area for Xymon extensions. It's a wiki-based that subscribed users can add content to. When a user wishes to add a new monitor (add-on, report, etc), it provides a template to allow for consistent look and feel of those tasks. There are also plans as time permits to extend it to using one of the sqlite plugins available to enhance ease of adding/sorting new additions without having to update 2 pages. Also, those of you who have used The Shire, any feedback (both positive and negative) would be appreciated. Thoughts? =G=

I'm going to put all the info I have on http://www.docum.org/twiki/bin/view/Hobbit/WebHome in the shire/xymonton. This is a test for me to see if the shire is usable or not. Stef

I like the idea of a single support site for XYmon. What about setting up some sort of site mirroring? That way if The Shire is down, people still have access. Robert

I like to see Xymon support similar with following http://trac.edgewall.org/build but that is not sourceforge, the shire and it is just my view. http://24.1.201.235/trac is my xymon at home pet project. Send me any issues you run into. It's built on top of Dokuwiki so it's a very simple (yet powerful) interface. It's also modeled a bit after the Dokuwiki plugin site. =G=

The nice thing is, it's dokuwiki which is fairly easy to mirror. If SF hadn't changed their model it would live up there instead. At some point, I'm going to look into a hosting provider...but I've at least gotten my power issues under control. =G=

Well, since I have a history with www.deadcat.net I would suggest something like that would be perfect :) Of course, there are a number of improvements to that system that could/should be made (in hindsight) as well. However, the basic concept of the site works quite well, with the original contributor retaining permission to edit/change their files and data, and anybody is able to upload. The main downside turned out to be that is was too difficult for someone who has improved a script to upload their version on top of the existing version. I haven't thought a lot about how to solve this, but I imagine some options are: 1) Upload a patch to a file which is displayed together with the file (ie, it is associated with the original file) but is maintained as a stand-alone file 2) Ability to communicate with the original contributor and hope they will incorporate the changes. 3) Ability to "adopt" a file if the original contributor agrees or does not respond. Probably some other options as well, and some people may not see all that as a bad thing at all. Of course, building the system that runs the site was somewhat time-consuming, and I'm sure the folks at Quest will not allow us to re-use it (sorry).
