Dear Xymon-Team

I have some question about the Xymon Server.

Can I upgrade from a BigBrother Server (Windows Server 2003) to a Xymon
Server (UNIX)?

Works Xymon on Windows Operating System (newer than Windows Server 2003)?

Should I installing a ubuntu server version or will be ok when i installing
ubuntu desktop version?

Thanks for the answer

Yes
Not really...
Server would be best, though not necessary

Hi,
Xymon server-part only runs on Linux (and other Unix
variants). It will work fine on any of the Ubuntu variants, server or
desktop.
Upgrading from BB should be fairly straight-forward - your
bb-hosts file must be renamed to "hosts.cfg", and the alert-setup must
be re-done, since the Xymon alert configuration is very different.

What can I make when the command <tar zxf xymon-4.3.10.tar.gz> doesn't work
(with sudo it also doesnt work)?

And I have not found a resolution about installing with a gui?

There is no GUI installer. Are you using those weird characters with tar?
What's the output when the command fails?

I'll have to make some guesses here, but first I need to say, you have to give us more to work on. I've been in support for a long time, and "it doesn't work" doesn't mean anything. What doesn't work? This is like calling the help desk and saying "The internet is down!". I've had that, usually pressing the cap locks key on the users keyboard fixes the issue.

Give us something to work with:
Does the command just hang and you have to kill it? It's pretty big, maybe you don't wait long enough.
Did you try tar -xvf xymon-4.3.10.tar.gz? This will give you output so you can see the progress of the files unpacking.
Does it end in an error? What's the error?
Are you trying to untar it into a directory you don't have write access to? Perhaps an nfs share that to which root can't write?
Is it possible to untar it in two steps. Gunzip xymon-4.3.10.tar and then tar -xvf xymon-4.3.10.tar?

Why are you trying to build such an old version of xymon? How about getting the latest, or just 1 or 2 revisions back?

Ultimately my best guess is you have a corrupt tar file or you have write issues on your local media.

if you don't know how to install it on Linux you can download a virtual
machine here, already built, it's not the latest version of the OS, it's an
old OS, but maybe it works for you
