Chris has updated his wonderful script that was written for hobbit
##############################
# bb-hosts.cgi
# Written by: Chris Naude
# Purpose: Provides a basic web interface to edit bb-hosts.
# Uses a lock file and md5sums to keep things sane.
# Requirements: md5sum
# File permissions should be setup so that the web user can write to $xymon_hosts_file
# Hint: Use chmod, chown, setfacl, or sudo. ;)
# Tested on Red Hat AS 3 with Apache2
#
# Version 1.3 - Left justify textarea for IE
# - Fixed menu
# Version 1.2 - Now supports Xymon 4.3.2 and greater.
# Version 1.1 - Added Xymon support. Enjoy!
#
##############################

go take a look and check out his script section from the menu to view the source

General, you put only the test you want to see with

group-only in your host.cfg

http://www.xymon.com/xymon/help/manpages/man5/hosts.cfg.5.html

group-only COLUMN1|COLUMN2|COLUMN3 [group-title]
Same as the "group" and "group-compress" lines, but includes only the
columns explicitly listed in the group. Any columns not listed will be
ignored for these hosts.

All the purple entries come from the client itself so I would recommend that you ensure that the Xymon or Hobbit client is running properly on “infy-x08vcanbsp” and that it can reach the Xymon server on port 1984.

Hi all

Server info:
Host - RHEL6.5
Version - 4.3.17
Packaged by J Cleaver (Terabithia)

I'm having a problem with a definition in /etc/xymon/client-local.cfg.
---
[host=dmz_ap01]
file:`ls -ltr /home/enmac/customer-data/CUST9100REP*CSV | tail -n 1`
---
The problem is that Xymon reports bad (red) with the page showing
---
 -rw-r--r-- 1 username groupname14314345 Mar 10 2014
/home/username/customer-data/CUST9100REP20140310002349.CSV
File is missing
---
Now, the file is not missing, and Xymon is correctly showing its mode,
size, ownership details, etc.
Any ideas what I've done wrong here?

Thanks

Xymon requires that the filename is produced by the backticks. You're
having it produce more than the filename because you have the "-l" switch
for the "ls" command. Try:

file:`ls -tr /home/enmac/customer-data/CUST9100REP*CSV | tail -n 1`

xymon-client on xymon server sending to other xymon servers

I have this working in one environment with 3 xymon servers, but just set up another 2 servers in a locked down environment.

To have data sent to other xymon servers, all I had to do was change the

XYMSERVERS=
line in xymonclient.cfg in the /home/xymon/client/etc folder

Running 4.3.11 in my normal setup, and 4.3.10 in the new one. RHEL 6 in the new setup and Centos 5 in the old one.

I am not seeing anything from the either new server in ghost client report except

10.24.13.31    jsppvlscix01    1:16  , with a blank hostname

, or in the defined server in hosts.cfg.
ping is working between the 2 new servers.

Is there anything else that needs to be done for the xymon client to work on the xymon server ?
I checked my working and new tasks.cfg and they appear to be the same.
I also checked that port 1984 is open on each via telnet.

Any hints appreciated on how to do further testing.

Thanks !

On our xymon (4.3.26) server, which otherwise works just fine,
/var/log/xymon/xymonlaunch.log issues the following warning the
following every 5 minutes.
This again indicates that the culprit is xymonlaunch
:

WARNING: Cannot open include file '/var/run/xymonclient-runtime.cfg',
line was: include /var/run/xymonclient-runtime.cfg

This seems related to an earlier report @
http://comments.gmane.org/gmane.comp.monitoring.hobbit/26155 stating

" that in: /usr/lib/xymon/client/etc/xymonclient.cfg on the server
once the RPM is
installed you need to replace the include statement with the below text:
XYMSRV="" # IP address of the Xymon server
XYMSERVERS="" # IP of multiple Xymon servers. XYMSRV
must be "0.0.0.0".

This is because the init script for the client correctly uses the
/etc/default/xymon-client to create a
file /var/run/xymonclient-runtime.cfg that is what is included, but
the server init script does not do these things."

I suppose there are multiple ways to resolve this, but some advice is needed:
1) include a few line into the server init script (/etc/init.d/xymon)
which creates the xymonclients-runtime.cfg file
2) modify or remove the include line in
/usr/lib/xymon/client/etc/xymonclient.cfg on the server

We use rpms created from the supplied spec files, and the server has
the xymon package installed only, as the xymon(-server) and
xymon-client packages conflicts (you can not install both)

For now we have commented the include line out manually, but please
advise on what a proper resolution might look like.

On my installation, I have this in /etc/default/xymon:

cat <<EOF >/var/run/xymonclient-runtime.cfg
XYMSERVERS="10.3.3.20 10.3.23.20"
XYMSRV="0.0.0.0"
EOF

(Note: I have two xymon servers, hence two IP addresses.)

This automatically creates the /var/run/xymonclient-runtime.cfg file each
time the Xymon server is started using the init scripts. Not sure if this
is the best way, or even a very good way. But it works for me.

The thing is, files in /var/run/ probably shouldn't be expected to exist
after a reboot. In practice, I suspect they do for most apps, but a system
administrator should be able to wipe this directory out prior to a reboot,
and everything should come back like it was before.

Have you restarted Xymon since doing this? Do the client scripts work as
expected?

I suspect that if you remove the include line altogether, you will no
longer have XYMSERVERS/XYMSRV defined, and it will break the client side on
next restart. (Actually, it might even cause impact on the next execution
of xymonclient, typically every 5 minutes.) If this is the case, you would
have to replace the include line either with definitions of these
variables, or an include for a different file, which you populate with the
values you require.

I don't know the "correct" way to do this kind of thing. There's certainly
a problem here, where the default install creates errors in the logs. It'd
be good to get some input from any of the guys on the list who were
involved in creating the spec.

Hi Robert,
I'm not aware of any xymon-default using 'lsof'. Where do you see it being called/used?

Cheers
Thomas

If you have extensions, e.g. the `hobbit-plugins`-package present in Debian, this changes of course.
The `libs`-extension included in that package for instance uses `lsof`.
