RRDs created, never updated

I've been using BB/Hobbit with RRDtool for, I guess at least 5 years, maybe
more. I've installed it successfully on maybe 10 servers. Things certainly
got easier with Hobbit compared to BB!

I've just installed Hobbit on a Centos 5.2 box and for the life of me I
can't work out why my RRDs aren't getting updated (they are always created
during first run, but never updated). I've grepped every log, history file,
etc I can find and can find no hints. Can someone suggest where to look for
errors or problems to do with *updating* the RRDs?

Everything is stock, I haven't touched the bb-hosts file, indeed anything
really...

So if you tail rrd-data.log and rrd-status.log you don't see any messages that indicate any failure in the rrd process?

Does the Hobbit web display show any red alerts indicating that a rrd process crashed?

Which release of Hobbit are you running?

Hi Rich,

Thank you for your quick response.

I am using hobbit-4.2.0.

I have no red alerts.

Green: bbd,bbgen,bbtest,conn,cpu,disk,hobbitd,http,info,memory,msgs*,trends
Grey: files,ports,procs

Note I did have to make /var/log/messages 660 and root.hobbit for it to be
read.

I get nothing in the logs. After deleting all logs, and stopping and
starting hobbit, and waiting 20 minutes, I get this:

No, I haven't patched at all. I don't see any patches at

Perhaps worth mentioning - the hist directory appears to have events

file).

I never had such a problem on any installation. Ones a rrd file is created, it is also updated.

Can you check if you have the needed processes running ?

"ps -ef | grep hobbitd_rrd" shows 4 processes on my box (lines are truncated):

hobbit 17554 17534 0 16:39 ? 00:00:05 hobbitd_channel --channel=status --log=/home/users/hobbit/server/log/rrd-status.log hobbitd_rrd --rrddir=/home/users/hobbit/data/rrd
hobbit 17558 17534 0 16:39 ? 00:00:00 hobbitd_channel --channel=data --log=/home/users/hobbit/server/log/rrd-data.log hobbitd_rrd --rrddir=/home/users/hobbit/data/rrd
hobbit 17559 17558 0 16:39 ? 00:00:16 hobbitd_rrd --rrddir=/home/users/hobbit/data/rrd
hobbit 17564 17554 0 16:39 ? 00:00:43 hobbitd_rrd --rrddir=/home/users/hobbit/data/rrd

You can also trigger an error by making the rrd files unwritable by the hobbit user. This should put an error in the server logfiles whenever hobbit tries to update the rrd files.

Thanks, I had no idea that page existed!

FWIW, I am using RRDTool 1.3.4.

After patching, now during hobbit ./configure I get this (which doesn't
appear to present a problem at the time as it continues apparently ok):

Checking for RRDtool ...

Linking RRD with PNG library: -L/usr/lib -lpng

After starting hobbit, now I get "bbdisplay terminated by signal 6" in the
hobbitlaunch.log, and my hobbit HTML page doesn't work anymore (Going to the
hobbit index webpage I get:

Index of /hobbit

Additionally, the RRD files are, as before, created but never updated.

Apparently your rrdtool is quite new. I'm running a very current snapshot and my rrd is
only 1.2.12.

I have install RRDTool 1.2.28 now so I have:

[root at zzz hobbit-4.2.0]# ll /usr/local/ | grep rrd
drwxr-xr-x 6 root root 4096 Nov 6 05:41 rrdtool-1.2.28
drwxr-xr-x 6 root root 4096 Nov 5 04:44 rrdtool-1.3.4

I seem to be having trouble getting hobbit to use 1.2.28. At first I just
removed the 1.3.4 directory, hobbit configure reported that it detected and
was using rrdtool 1.2, but when it ran the logs filled with errors about not
finding 1.3.4 files.

I then restored 1.3.4 and tried using:

./configure --server --rrdinclude=/usr/local/rrdtool-1.2.28/include
--rrdlib=/usr/local/rrdtool-1.2.28

However ./configure appears to ignore the extra commands and says it will
use 1.3.4 files:

Can anyone advise how to properly remove RRDtool 1.3.4 or get hobbit to

Hi Larry,

I always "rm -fr /usr/local/hobbit" and "rm -fr /var/log/hobbit/*" before
recompiling to ensure everything is totally clean.

Nonetheless, I get "hobbitd_rrd: error while loading shared libraries:
librrd.so.4: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory
2008-11-06 06:09:22 Worker process died with exit code 32512, terminating"
in my logs now as it appears to still be looking for the 1.3.4 rrdtool for
some reason (there must be something still on the system that tells it to
look for librrd.so.4)?

This is despite this showing up during configure (having removed the 1.3.4
rrdtool directory entirely before running configure):
quoted from Rich Smrcina

"Checking for RRDtool ...
test-rrd.c: In function âmainâ:
test-rrd.c:30: error: too few arguments to function ârrd_graphâ
make: *** [test-compile] Error 1

Found RRDtool libraries in /usr/local/rrdtool-1.2.28/lib
Linking RRD with PNG library: -L/usr/lib -lpng
"

My apologies for getting sidetracked here, but perhaps this will be useful
to archive for other people who need to downgrade their RRDtool (if this is
indeed the problem anyway!).

No, I haven't patched at all. I don't see any patches at http://sourceforge.net/project/showfiles.php?group_id=128058.
Perhaps worth mentioning - the hist directory appears to have events generated at first run, but never thereafter (other than the "allevents" file).

The Hobbit build seems to be remembering about the newer release. Before you configure
again run 'make distclean'.

Rich you are quite the legend!

Indeed - I needed to "make distclean" before recompiling hobbit.

This has fixed the problem entirely.

So the end result of this thread, is that hobbit 4.2.1 is not compatible
with RRDTool V1.3.8 (likely 1.3.x).

Thank you to everyone who has helped and good luck in making hobbit
compatible with RRDTool 1.3 in the future. In the meantime, perhaps an
fatal warning if configure detects rrdtool 1.3.x would suffice.

Warmly,

Just wondering, why?
As far as I know, all linux distrbutions have the correct rrdtool-devel
packages in the repository.

I've been using BB/Hobbit with RRDtool for, I guess at least 5 years, maybe
more. I've installed it successfully on maybe 10 servers. Things
certainly got easier with Hobbit compared to BB!

I've just installed Hobbit on a Centos 5.2

I note that you could have installed Hobbit *really* easily:

http://staff.telkomsa.net/packages/rhel5/hobbit/

(has the allinone patch, and the BBWin patch, and the devmon patch).

The preceding question is, why is the devel list so quiet (which is where I
was hoping to ask this question months ago).

Hi,

the compilation stuff set aside, I had noticed my rrds didn't update
too. The truth was that they *did* update, but the mtime of the files
doesn't change, though.

Later librrd versions apparently do some funky stuff with mmap() that
doesn't update the timestamps. The contents are still updated.

The missing timestamp update is a Linux kernel 2.6.x feature/bug.
