"mailq" reports similar to the following:

                /var/spool/mqueue (4 requests)

Because the message IDs keep changing, I can only look at one at any one time. Seems to contain an ongoing log of everything happening via the mailer:

A look at ps shows the following:

Does the Hobbit notification.log indicate that it's sending out notifications?  Are there indications in the sendmail log files of any errors?

Yes, the notification log indicates the sending of notifications (currently only have a single alert notification set up and this is what is documented in the log).
Sendmail is not showing any errors.

Your "mailq" output suggests that you're seeing multiple alerts a
minute.  You may need to check your alert setting to find out why it's
doing that.
