Ack not working properly Xymon 4.3.0.0 beta2 - upgrade?

Hello,

Acks are not working for me, typically when Ack'ing 2 of the same things in
a short space of time. But also randomly, Acking stops working.

I have the 'cookie not found, dropping ack' appearing in hobbitd.log but I
am not sure if this is a result of the Ack module 'crashing' or a direct
cause. I did see some older messages about this and mention of a fix but I
combed through all the release notes for all versions and patches since
4.3.0 beta 3 until now.

Note I am using an older version of Xymon, 4.3.0.0 beta2 and I was
wondering if upgrading would fix this. I have never upgraded Xymon before
and I am not sure if it's an easy task or not.

My fix has been to restart hobbit.sh but this is removing some acks so it's
no longer an option as we have now moved into intensive Ack usage.

thanks

All I can offer is that upgrades are relatively easy, if you're using RPM's there is almost certainly a newer RPM out there, and that I've never had problems with acknowledgement really -- my first 4.3 was I think 4.3.7.

Thanks Ryan.

I have researched and it might not be too much of an issue to upgrade but
seems I will have to get past the tricky step of 4.3.0.0 beta2 upwards
which involves some Hobbit->Xymon name changing in various files. Perhaps
not so tricky. I'll keep reading up. Will have to upgrade.

The upgrade script did a very good job, in my experience (I upgraded from 4.2.3 so the name change and upgrade together was harder). Just keep a backup and practice if need be.

You definitely need to upgrade. There was a lot of problems with the ack code in the early 4.3 releases, so I am 99.99% sure that it has been fixed in the current versions.

Upgrading from the beta2 release is a bit more work than normal due to the Hobbit->Xymon name change, but there is a document in the 4.3.x source tree that describes what you must do.

Thanks to both of you, I will be put all this into action soon but will
need to test and agree with board.

Henrik, would it be possible to get a copy or a link of what is referred to
in this post you wrote in 2011 in a thread entitled '[Xymon] Acknowledge
issue continues with xymon 4.3.2 ' please?
http://lists.xymon.com/pipermail/xymon/2011-April/031292.html

"

I've come up with a version of xymond.c that eliminates the rbtree code
for the cookies. It uses a much less efficient way of looking up the
cookies - basically, it will scan through all of the status-log entries
that xymond has in memory - but since this only happens when a cookie
needs to be renewed, or when xymond receives an ack, it should not put
too much extra load on your system. It would be very interesting to hear
if this patch on top of 4.3.2 solves the issue; if it does, then I
surely know that there is a bug in the rbtree "delete node" code.

Regards,
Henrik"

I was not able to get the attachment from the thread/mailing list. I would
like to see if this helps as I need to use ACKs ASAP and will not be able
to upgrade Xymon for a week or two at best and I'm still on 4.3.0-0.beta2
as described.

thanks

I am not sure that will solve the problem for you, as I recall there
were several issues that took a couple of iterations before everything
worked OK. But feel free to try it.
