I'm using a product called VMX, it's not free, as in beer, but I've had an excellent experience with it and the support was great. http://www.it-eckert.de/final.html#Vmware-Monitor-Intro

So on our setup...

We monitor the vCenter server using BBwin checking for the various
processes.
The vCenter database is monitored using the dbcheck.pl scripts:
http://sourceforge.net/projects/hobbit-perl-cl/
Each ESXi host is monitored using the xymonesxi scripts:
http://sourceforge.net/projects/xymonesxi/
