BBWin 0.7 available

Hello everyone, I publish today BBWin 0.7 (a free Big Brother Hobbit Windows client). I know I'm late, I said it would be on last monday :-) You can download the MSI installer of this preview from http://sourceforge.net/projects/bbwin This preview contains the new following stuffs: * The msgs agent : it monitors the event logs. It uses match and ignore rules with a lot of options. Rules can be specified with EventId, Event type, Source, LogFile and description (perl regular expressions can be used). * BBWin configuration auto reloading : BBWin auto reload can be set so any change to the BBWin.cfg file will indicate BBWin to reload its configuration without restarting the service itself. * bbpager : BBWin now supports bbpager feature (used with Big Brother server, not compatible with hobbit) * cpu improved : Cpu has been rewritten and reports now contains process owner and priority * Documentation: the documentation is now delivered as a chm file, easyer to read than first my ReadMe.txt file. It will be more complete with time. Also, it may contains many english bad spelling. I will take english lesssons soon but you are welcome to send me corrections :) * Migration tools: configuration migration from bbnt to BBWin for bbpager and msgs has been implemented Note : This new version now use registry for the hostname setting. I decided that because it will help to have generic BBWin.cfg files. You may delete the hostname xml setting in your BBWin.cfg file and fill the registry key HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\BBWin\hostname. The BBWin 0.6 contained the following stuffs : * Resolution of a major bugs with the configuration agents which was the cause of many crashs at the start or stop of the BBWin service. * The svcs agent dll : it monitors the windows services I also create a poll on the BBWin forum page about future features of BBWin. You are welcome to participate to it, so people can give ideas and remarks so, we can improve BBWin to obtain the best tool for everyone. To finish, I would like to thanks Steve Aiello and Hermann-Josef Beckers for their help in testing BBWin. Have a nice day, Etienne.

Feature request for 0.8, can it still support the hostname setting in
the .cfg file and if present set the regeistry.
It's a PITA to have to edit the registry after installing 0.7. The
error message in the event log doesn't help - telling you to add the
setting to the .cfg file, then complaining when you do.
TIA (and thanks for the software!)

Ok. It's not a big deal to still support hostname setting in the .cfg file as optionnal setting. If the hostname setting is present, it will override registry setting. -- Etienne GRIGNON

Hi Etienne
do you think the bbwin installer could automagically fill the registry
and/or the .cfg file with the computer name ?
It would save IMO a lot of time...
Thanks in advance for your answer.

Indeed, an other user advise me to support environment variables for the hostname setting, so in next BBWin version, the registry is by default %COMPUTERNAME% so it gets the current computer name. Regards, Etienne.

Did you read the README? You need to put the hostname (as hobbit knows it) into the registry. Frank

Hi Jan, As Frank advise you, you should check that the hostname is configured (it should be not empty) in the registry.(HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/SOFTWARE/BBWin=hostname) Also, you may check the application event log, if BBWin can't start, you should find error events in it with the reasons of failure. Let us know if you still can't start BBWin. Regards, Etienne. 2006/5/31, Jan Telling <user-8c6863ed7983@xymon.invalid>:

Hi Jason, Happy that you find out yourself. As I wrote in the documentation, it is not very hard to use existing scripts that were used for bbnt : There are 2 ways to migrate your existing BB scripts made for bbnt to BBWin. - Change the BBNt externals registry key value to the BBWin tmp directory path, then just run the scripts from BBWin. - The second way consists to modify all your scripts to use the tmppath BBWin registry key instead the bbnt key Also : If you are running vbscript, you have to add "cscript " before the script path. If you are running a cmd file, you have to add "cmd /c " before the file path. The current directory for the bbwin service process is the BBWin bin path. Hey Frank, I did 2 things. First thing I did was I added C:\Program Files\BBWin\ into the "(default)" registry value at HKLM\Software\BBWin key. Then I had to open all the vbs scripts and make it an absolute value to C:\Program Files\BBWin\tmp for when it does it output. This is NOT ideal!! I only did this because I didn't have time to muck around on fixing the problem since I have to remove a few BB clients, and plus I never did vbs programming so I could correct the problem.
