Implementation Assistance - New User

Hello All, I'm still having difficulties moving my existing Big Brother install over to Hobbit. I'm considering just continuing to use Big Brother. I'll do a summary to the group once I've gotten everything moved over and the problems that I've had. I need assistance with the clients. The server is working. 1) I did one client yesterday, and some of the scripts that I got from deadcat don't work. The reason is they source bbsource.local, so I'm working on that. What have other folks done with regard to deadcat scripts sourcing bbssys.local? 2) I had larrd installed on Big Brother, and assumed that the larrd scripts on the clients could be disabled because Hobbit did iostat and vmstat. However, they turned purple. So, I restarted the larrd scripts from within Hobbit. However, they still stay purple. They don't seem to update properly. Do you have to use larrd on the clients or does Hobbit do an iostat, vmstat test like larrd? 3) Does anyone use Hobbit for clients? I'm considering just living my clients using Big Brother because of less implementation hours. What's the advantage to moving to hobbit? 4) Are there any additional add-ins for hobbit, ie.. plugins Thanks..James

No, the Hobbit-client software gathers all data as you said (fi. iostat, vmstat) needed for the server to build the graph-part. The iostat-part is currently under development (search the mailinglist for more info) but I'm confident that Henrik will deliver some terrific work here (again). The vmstat, needed for fi. the load-graph should already work.

You can do that, there is no need to rush to change all clients immedeately, but you can change in phases (first the test-systems, see the differences and new graphs). Imho, there are lots of improvements here, because a Hobbit-client show top-output for the cpu-test, ps-output for the process-check, etc. So the need to login at a system is hardly there, after you changed clients. Besides, the Hobbit-client is consuming less resources. Best of all, the output the os-commands generate is send to your hobbit server and can be seen and checked! At the bottom of each test, you see the link 'Client data'. Oh, I forgot another, even better feature: centralized management of thresholds! Disk, memory, cpu etc. It's the server to decide and not the client. So I think you will gain some time here ;-)

Thanks Peter. How do I see vmstat? I see iostatdisk, iostatcpu, & vmstat running on the client, but how do I pull up the reports? With BB, I have a column entry for those. Thanks...James

I have a load of URL's in my bb-hosts file that I was monitoring on by Big Brother install, but they don't seem to have carried over to the Hobbit installation. I see no http column. Thanks...James

Hi James, I guess you are referring to the larrd column where the vmstat output pops up. Of course you know Hobbit calls this one trends and the vmstat graph data is delivered like this... ...snip... [vmstat] procs memory swap io system cpu r b swpd free buff cache si so bi bo in cs us sy id wa 0 0 27344 19528 169928 727420 0 0 2 3 5 4 0 0 3 0 0 0 27344 19760 169928 727492 0 0 0 6 102 25 0 0 100 0 ...snip... and portions of the output result in the (default vmstat) CPU Utilization graph (see the hobbitgraph definition file). In this file you see graphdefinitions for vmstat0 through vmstat9 and then decide which graph to pop up for your particular host (See bbhosts). Hope this helps. Hi James, Please supply more details. Parts from you bb-hosts-file on the Hobbit server. What have you set up, what do you expect and does not work as expected? Peter 2006/11/3, James Wade <user-659655b2ea05@xymon.invalid>:
