Yes, we do that.
Our zone is a full (not sparse) zone.
And we have a local home directory for hobbit on all machines (global or
zone). Works fine.

We use a sparse zone. Hobbit is installed in a local home directory.
Any tools we need we install in the global zone. If the hobbit server
is compromised in anyway, most of the files are read-only. It works
fine for us too.

What do you want to run?
I run my Hobbit server in a zone and have various Hobbit clients installed in zones as well. It's a personal choice whether you monitor the zone itself or the container, both ways have their benefits and issues.

What do you want to run?
I like to understand the pros and cons before entering this direction.
I run my Hobbit server in a zone and have various Hobbit clients installed in zones as well. It's a personal choice whether you monitor the zone itself or the container, both ways have their benefits and issues.
Would you mind to share the benefits and issues with us ?
I will summarize this discussion on hobbit wiki site lateron.

benefits:
1. Virtualized hobbit server instance into a zone, so it is easy to relocate to other host machine.
Good for disaster recovery, failed hobbit server can be reproduced by installing the zone backup at DR site.

issues:

The only real benefits and problems of running a Hobbit server in a zone apply to running anything in a zone: You can easily move the whole zone to a new server, but then you can easily restore the Hobbit server directory structure to another machine. You can backup a container server and all of its zones in one go (saves on backup licences), but then disk issues can affect all zones on one server. Running lots of zones on one server saves on hardware costs and power usage, but a hardware fault will take down lots of 'machines'.
I think if you happen to have lots of hardware lying around then steer away from zones and virtualisation, but if space is tight it's the more sensible way to go. There are plenty of general arguments for and against zones, each case should be assessed on its own requirements.
