There are two ways to do the monitoring. One way is to run a script on the
MS-SQL server that reports back to the Xymon server. This can be achieved
by one of the VBS scripts on the Xymonton Plugins page:
https://wiki.xymonton.org/doku.php/monitors

The other way is to have the Xymon server connect to the MS-SQL server
using a network-based SQL connection. For this, have a look at this page:
http://sourceforge.net/projects/hobbit-perl-cl/, and this one:
http://heinelt.info/index.php?option=com_remository&Itemid=24&func=fileinfo&id=13
.

You could probably do both. I've not tested any of these, and I have no
idea how well, or even if, they work.

If all you want to do is check that TCP/1433 is open, then you can do this
with a network check. As there are no network checks defined for MS-SQL,
you can create one, by adding the following to protocols.cnf:

[mssql]
      port 1433

Then, in hosts.cfg, add an "mssql" tag into the list of tags, like so:

192.168.1.10 mssqlserver.example.com # testip dialup mssql

This should create an "mssql" column with a red or green dot depending on
whether Xymon can connect on TCP port 1433.

Cheers
Jeremy

Ms-SQL is running on Windows.
So : 1) install old good BBWin as XyMon monitoring agent and setup it to sent basic information (cpu, ram, disk, etc.) to XyMon server
2) configure BBWin to report services availability with names, including "SQL" , optionally with auto-restart feature
3) Monitor anything You need using custom scripts as BBWin extensions or find ready ones in the web.

P.S. May be You can expand on the question in more details? What is not clear or what troubles do You have in configuring monitoring Microsoft SQL Server?

Best regards,
