I am trying to install hobbit in a Red Hat Enterprise Linux 4 server. I
talked earlier with Red Hat and they say that they don't support rpm
which are not downloaded from the Red Hat network.

Well, no problem, I prefer not to call them about it that not to run
hobbit since it is extremely useful for me.

Anyhow, I had installed it in a virtual machine running fc5 and it was
quite easy to install. I am just starting as a Linux administrator, and
even I had administered Windows servers for years, the switch is not so
easy. I like Linux and I am quite excited to get the most of it, but
sometimes I stumble around, just like at this moment, so here go a
couple of my silly questions:

For security reasons I should not run hobbit as root. I understand that,
but should I run the installation as root, or as hobbit?

Which would be the best folder for installation? I know this is a bit
more open, but I would like the server to be kept clean, so I don't want
to spread the installation everywhere I want it to make sense.

I think with just a little bit more of info I would be able to get a
good installation going. Thanks in advance

I run rhel3/rhel4 boxes and rebuild the rpm's provided from the
sourceforge website. I rebuild the .src.rpm. There are a few
dependencies not provided by RHN that I had to use the Dag repo for.

Run the processes as hobbit. The above RPMs will create the hobbit
user (if it doesn't exist) and run the processes as the hobbit user.

The one the rpm's use are decent enough to base your deployment from:

/usr/lib/hobbit
/var/lib/hobb
/etc/hobbit

Those are the main dirs used by the server and client rpms.

In my test setup, I have hobbit server running as hobbits user and client running as hobbitc.
I also spilt the binary installation into /opt/hobbits and /opt/hobbitc to keep server and client
binary coexist under /opt/hobbit(hobbit default is /opt/hobbit/server and /opt/server/client).

I also packaged hobbit client for three OS(hp,solaris and rhlinux) and their versions.
older OS like solaris 2.5/2.6 need works (kstat is not avaiable). HP-UX 10.20 need compilaton
weak also.

Hi all,

I have an odd problem, hobbit is running (both server and client) on our
main server but the odd thing is that the status' do not display at all
(i.e. status not available screen) hobbit reports itself as running when
doing hobbit.sh status but the below command indicates that there is a
problem:

[root at svr-gbn-bbr-01 server]# bin/bb 127.0.0.1 hobbitdboard
2006-10-31 10:16:51 Could not connect to bbd at 127.0.0.1:1984 - Connection
refused
2006-10-31 10:16:51 Whoops ! bb failed to send message - Connection
failed

I'm not sure why this has happened I was just trying to install
Francesco's Hobbit-perl-notes program (but have removed everything to do
with it to fix this problem first)...so ummm....help please :)

Thanks,
Jason.

Fixed, seems the MAXMSG_NOTES="4096" declaration caused the problem? -
probably something I did wrong...anyway sorry for spamming the list and
now I'm back to trying to get the notes thing to work :)

Jason.

From this it seems a problem related to the notes protocol. Check if you have something like: MAXMSG_NOTES="4096" in your
hobbitserver.cfg (It will allocate 4MB to notes messages)
Cfg2html create some big file and the default for NOTES protocol is 256k
I think.
Probably it should not crash the hobbitd.

It's possible that you don't have enough shared memory, you can try to
change the 4096 to something less like 1024 or 2048. it depends from the
size of your cfg2html generated file.
