Hello all,

I'm trying to create a hobbit client for windows. Can someone tell me how
the info is to be sent? Possibly a format. Should it be sent via a file or
straight connection. Any ideas would be great.

Thanks,

Stew

P.S. I know this has been said before, but..

Many, Many, Many THANKS for all your work Henrik

Stew,
On the agent side, though I am not a programmer by trade, I am trying
to
develop a windows client. Just working on it when I have the time.
I'll
post something when I get it, however I expect it won't be for a month
or
two.
We are looking into development for the Windows platform, but focusing
more on WMI scripts for testing given services/Applications (i.e.
Exchange / RPC / SQL Server, that kind of stuff)

Although we planned to just continue using the BBClient, there might be
value in coordinating efforts here. We are evaluating the methods
available to us in managing this; with the following considerations:

About 30 servers each with about 10 tests, hence upward of 300 scripts
(given each bbclient has a different install path / log directory), with
the added burden of rolling out updates or amendments to these scripts.

We are finding that management of client side tests has become
cumbersome with as little as 30 servers, and would like to work toward a
unified deployment and or deployment method.

Also, I am sure there are a number of people involved in monitoring
Microsoft servers; I would be interested to hear how you achieved this,
in addition to any indication of interest in the development of a client
/ test architecture.

I think you've done an amazing job. Cutting the ties with Qwest is a
good
thing. I bought the PE version during a big sale last year, and haven't
heard a thing from them (upgrades, etc). They should have given you a
big
check and thrown bbgen into BB. Just my personal opinion.

On the agent side, though I am not a programmer by trade, I am trying to

Thanks for everything Henrik.

<snip>
To be honest, I wonder if the quest version of BB is
actually selling/successful... ie, are there still loads
of new BB users sprouting up, or is it just old BTF
license users who are using/maintaining old BB
installations....
There haven't been many commercial updates, and it looks
like Quest is starting to move away from giving the source
out.
One thing I've noticed is that traffic on the BB mailing list appears
to have dropped significantly after the Hobbit mailinglist started,
and the beta-testing really got going.

There are currently 169 adresses subscribed to the Hobbit list, and a
handful more only on the announcement-list. I guess I must be doing
something right :-)

Hi all

I have been asleep for a while, and not monitoring what's been going on,
but can anybody tell me the status of the Windows client?
When I last paid close attention to the list, the client was in beta,
and if I recall, did a pretty OK job. (I installed it on a test system)
But that was at the old job.

New job, new Hobbit installation, and the Windoze crowd want to see the
client.

What's news?

This is the latest mail I have:

I publish today BBWin 0.7 (a free Big Brother Hobbit Windows client).
I know I'm late, I said it would be on last monday :-)

You can download the MSI installer of this preview from
http://sourceforge.net/projects/bbwin

This preview contains the new following stuffs:

* The msgs agent : it monitors the event logs. It uses match and
ignore rules with a lot of
options. Rules can be specified with EventId, Event type, Source,
LogFile and description
(perl regular expressions can be used).

* BBWin configuration auto reloading : BBWin auto reload can be set so
any change to the BBWin.cfg file
will indicate BBWin to reload its configuration without restarting the
service itself.

* bbpager : BBWin now supports bbpager feature (used with Big Brother
server, not compatible with hobbit)

* cpu improved : Cpu has been rewritten and reports now contains
process owner and priority

* Documentation: the documentation is now delivered as a chm file,
easyer to read than first my ReadMe.txt file. It will be more complete
with time. Also,
it may contains many english bad spelling. I will take english
lesssons soon but you are welcome to send me corrections :)

* Migration tools: configuration migration from bbnt to BBWin for
bbpager and msgs has been implemented

Does anyone know if there's going to be a gui wrapper around the config of this? I am reasonably impressed by the window client's abilities (just fired it up on one of my windows nodes), but I can tell that the windows sysadmins here will be a bit put off by having to manually make registry entries, and manually edit the xml config file. (It's one thing for us unix-dudes(or dudettes) to edit hobbit config items, but I know the windows guys like the gui way. The (older, yet still mostly functional) BBNT client is quite easy to install, configure, and run. I'm hoping that's what we ultimately end up with for the hobbit windows client!

I had been very wary of this client until about 10 mins ago when I installed and configured it and I also must say I'm reasonably impressed. The migrate from BBNT script had me up and running in about 60 seconds without having to worry about the config file and setting everything from scartch.

Is there a separate mailing list for the windows client or are we all putting together here on the hobbit list ?

I have a few more questions and want to make sure they are going to the right place :)

Cheers

Run strings against the hosts.db and you will see better output. I too
have been trying to setup devmon and cant get it working either, having
same problems as you. Run devmon with the --readbbhosts option, I even
used the -vv to see some info, it identifies the switch correctly and
looks like its using the right template, but no output or anything in
the log file.

Anyone else have this working?

--readbbhosts option only creates the hosts.db file, nothing else. You
then need to start the devmon proccess without the --readbbhost option
for it to query the SNMP devices. After starting it doing a ps -ef
should should then number of threads (configured in cfg file) + 1.

Maybe I missunderstood, but happy to help with the experience I have
had.

Craig
Run strings against the hosts.db and you will see better output. I too have been trying to setup devmon and cant get it working either, having same problems as you. Run devmon with the --readbbhosts option, I even used the -vv to see some info, it identifies the switch correctly and looks like its using the right template, but no output or anything in the log file.

Anyone else have this working?

You've to create a template dir for cisco-3550 (just like the 3500 but
change the 3500 in 3550) or it will not work because it cannot find a
usable template. I don't know if this will work sometimes mostly on
cisco device a xx00 device seems to have different oid from a xx50
device.

To get the data you also need to run devmon as a deamon (If i remember
well if you run it without any option it will go in background). The
devmon --readbbhosts will only read the bbhosts and pass test
information to the daemon running.

Which device to query is determined by entries in the bb-hosts file.

Related to this would anyone be willing to send me any cisco, hp/dell
(printer) oids they know work?

But as for helping as Johann said you add a DEVMON tag to the bb-hosts
for the switch etc you want tested (you can force using
DEVMON:model(<vendor>;<model>) ) after you have done this you run devmon
--readbbhosts and it will search through for usable tests it can run and
report any entries that do not have matching templates, you can also
look in /var/logs/devmon.log for useful output messages

Any templates you create must follow this structure

DIR:name (best to use vendor-model)
  |
  |--specs (must contain vendor, model, snmpver and sysDesc)
  |--DIR:test (this will be the name reported to hobbit)
         |
         |-- oids (contains oids and handles you assign
	   |-- message (message format reported to hobbit)
         |-- thresholds(when to generate status changes and messages to
use)
         |-- transforms (data manipulation)
         |-- exceptions (what is sounds like)

Thanks,
Jason

Yup,

I can send you the templates we are currently using...

  |
         |

Thanks,
Jason

A little correction:

Which device to query is determined by entries in the bb-hosts file.

You need the templates to specify what OID's to query, how to
calculate/handle the output, define thresholds, generating the
message...

We are currently monitor Cisco 6506, Cisco 4003, Cisco 1700 and Netapp
boxes with devmon.

You have to create a template for the devices named by the model in the
System Description of the snmp output. By this way the devmon daemon is
able to determine what devices to query. You can use existing templates
as a basis and change them to fit to your needs

Run strings against the hosts.db and you will see better output. I too
have been trying to setup devmon and cant get it working either, having
same problems as you. Run devmon with the --readbbhosts option, I even
used the -vv to see some info, it identifies the switch correctly and
looks like its using the right template, but no output or anything in
the log file.

Anyone else have this working?

Ok, how do I run devmon in daemon mode to capture the data? When I run
devmon with no options it runs for about 15 seconds then finishes?

Thanks

But as for helping as Johann said you add a DEVMON tag to the bb-hosts for the switch etc you want tested (you can force using
DEVMON:model(<vendor>;<model>) ) after you have done this you run devmon --readbbhosts and it will search through for usable tests it can run and report any entries that do not have matching templates, you can also look in /var/logs/devmon.log for useful output messages

Any templates you create must follow this structure

DIR:name (best to use vendor-model)

  |--DIR:test (this will be the name reported to hobbit)
         |

Run strings against the hosts.db and you will see better output. I too have been trying to setup devmon and cant get it working either, having same problems as you. Run devmon with the --readbbhosts option, I even used the -vv to see some info, it identifies the switch correctly and looks like its using the right template, but no output or anything in the log file.

You may want to use the Devmon mailing list for your devmon woes,
user-7cdab8524266@xymon.invalid.

By default, when you start devmon, devmon runs as a daemon. to
troubleshoot you can use the -f option to keep it in the foreground,
i.e. ./devmon -f -vvvv

that may output information to point you in the right direction.

I'm interested in devmon templates too it's possible to make them
available on theshire or devmon sourceforge page or in some other
places? I'm a bit lazy about snmp but I think that if everyone who create some
template for devmon will share them we will have some more to play with
:D

It's here: http://sourceforge.net/projects/bbwin

I haven't tried it as I'm not allowed to use Hobbit to monitor

Works like a charm and certainly fuller featured than te BB client
(and a better fit with Hobbit).

This is not the Windows client you've heard of, but I'll mention it anyway in case someone is interested:

http://extranet.365-24.se/MrBig/

It is compatible with Big Brother and Hobbit servers and runs on any Windows version from 4.0 up to and including 6.0 (Longhorn) build 5600. It is possible that it runs on Windows 98 too, but we don't host any such "servers" anymore. ;-)

Anybody using devmon?

I've got it running on our primary hobbit server, but I want the data to
go to our backup server as well.

I tried setting the DISPSERV to 0.0.0.0 but that doesn't seem to be
working.

Also, I need a template for a Cisco 3800. Any help there?

Thanks,
Paul.

Hi all

Can anybody tell me the current status of Windows clients for Xymon?
Is BBWin still the best we have?
I remember seeing somebody on the list working on a new Windows client.
Where are we on that?

It is working pretty well, but is still being developed very much.
For production use, I would probably stick with BBWin, but you are
very welcome to try out the Xymonclient - it's available on
Sourceforge at
http://xymon.svn.sourceforge.net/viewvc/xymon/sandbox/WinPSClient/

There has been some talk about releasing it at the same time as
the 4.3.0 server release. I think that could be a possibility, but
Dave Baldwin (who has done most of the development after my initial
proof-of-concept version) has some say in this.

XymonPSClient is working fine for me on various 2003R2 and 2008 servers.
It hasn't been tested much on XP, Vista or Win7 so there may be issues
there.

There are still a number of issues that would ideally be resolved before
a release. Off the top of my head:
* due to Service runner used (ABC_SRVANY.EXE) being 32-bit, when
running as a service it runs in 32-bit mode only. There may be a
workaround for this - the problem is the path mangling done by Windows
to keep the 32 and 64-bit "worlds" separate. If anyone knows of a path
to invoke the 64-bit powershell interpreter from the 32-bit world that's
what's required. I haven't looked very hard yet.
* running as a service is fragile. The runner does not monitor its child
at all, so if the powershell process died the service would still appear
to be running. A proper service runner is really required to solve both
of these. I haven't actually experienced any problems in my test
environment, but I'm uncomfortable with the current situation. At least
the client would go purple if it died I guess.
* it doesn't support external scripts yet. I was hoping that another
project Neil Franken was working on could be adapted to solve all of
these, but I'm not aware he has got it to a stage of broader
circulation. His last post to the list indicated he was changing jobs,
so not sure if he's even on the list anymore.
* a few pending feature requests/bug fixes of my own and from the list I
need to add in when I get time.

Happy to discuss all of the above.

David.

I know this has probably come up before but does anyone know if there is an alternative Windows client to BBWin that actually works. I've got problems with both 0.12 and 0.13 versions of the client.

0.12 doesn't seem to work on Windows Server 2008 and 0.13 has a memory leak. This issue has been recently raised on the BBWin sourceforge big list and the reply was, 0.13 is mostly just a port from VS 2008 to VS2010. I don't have the time to spend on improving it and to be honest it's probably not worth spending the time. We really need a client developed on C# so that it can take advantage of .NET's capabilities of hooking into the OS much more cleanly.

I appreciate that this is open source software and as such I don't expect people to jump on it and fix it, however it appears that BBWin may not be fit for purpose in the near future. I've looked at MrBig and WinPSClient but MrBig seems to have no one maintaining the code and WinPSClient hasn't been changed in 2 ¼ years.

Is anyone aware of any other options or has anyone considered perhaps writing something? I'd look into it myself but I'm not a programmer so although my VBScript and Shell script abilities are reasonable I wouldn't really be comfortable attempting something like this even though I have started to look at learning C#.

I agree, BBWin is not ideal, but it is surprisingly resilient considering it is alpha code and with all the changes in Windows...

One way would be to put up some funding - maybe someone is willing to put in the work. I'd be happy to contribute (monetarily that is - I, too, am no programmer). We have a big 'investment' in xymon and it would be great if the windows side was strengthened.

BTW, I have been using BBWin 0.13 on both 2008R2 and 2012, a dozen systems so far, for a month or two in production. I think there was a problem once (on a system with *huge* logging) where we have to restart BBWin but otherwise it has been stable. It just takes (at times considerable) patience to work out the foibles.

Hi there,

You can always try the checkwin agent. see:
http://code.google.com/p/checkwin/

When using the NSClient++ (nagios) agent, just be shure to use the
NSClient++ 0.3.9 version.

I didn't had the time to adapt this check to the NSclient++ 0.4.X version
but till now, checkwin is working on all our Windows server versions. (not
tested on Windows 8)

fit for purpose in the near future. I’ve looked at MrBig and WinPSClient
but MrBig seems to have no one maintaining the code and WinPSClient hasn’t
been changed in 2 ¼ years.

Is anyone aware of any other options or has anyone considered perhaps
writing something? I’d look into it myself but I’m not a programmer so
although my VBScript and Shell script abilities are reasonable I wouldn’t
really be comfortable attempting something like this even though I have
started to look at learning C#.

Hi there,
You can always try the checkwin agent. see: http://code.google.com/p/checkwin/
When using the NSClient++ (nagios) agent, just be shure to use the NSClient++ 0.3.9 version.
I didn't had the time to adapt this check to the NSclient++ 0.4.X version but till now, checkwin is working on all our Windows server versions. (not tested on Windows 8)

I know this has probably come up before but does anyone know if there is an alternative Windows client to BBWin that actually works. I’ve got problems with both 0.12 and 0.13 versions of the client.
0.12 doesn’t seem to work on Windows Server 2008 and 0.13 has a memory leak.

If you are not too scared to delve into Powershell, then I would really like you to dig into the WinPSClient.

It does work - despite not having been changed for quite some time. The main problem with it appears to be that it is a bit ressource-consuming; Powershell is not the most effective scripting language.

But it is one that is supported on all current versions of Windows ... and it does provide you with hooks into all of the Microsoft monitoring interfaces. As I understand, getting data with Powershell is just as "easy" as doing it in C#.

Because of the network changes that would be required (especially for machines in the DMZ and PCI networks) this is not an option as we can have connections initiated from the clients but it’s unlikely we would be able to have connections initiated from the server.

The issues this would cause for us are worse than the BBWin memory leak issue.

Unfortunately we use quite a lot of External scripts and we also can't use Powershell. We have scripting disabled on all servers and while we might be able to get signed scripting allowed, we would require to run the client as a service which would have to run under the Local System account. Experience has shown us that this causes significant problems when trying to run signed scripts.
The last time we had a requirement to run a Powershell script as an external on BBWin, I ended up having to rewrite it in VBScript as we couldn't get the PS script to work as a signed script under the Local System account.

Unfortunately I don't make the rules under which I have to work, I just have to make the best of them and work within those rules for monitoring.

I’m currently looking at the code for BBWin (I’m checking out some ways of possibly finding memory leaks), I’ve checked it out from sourceforge SVN but when trying to build I’m getting the following error.

4> SubWCRev : E155036: The working copy at 'F:\BBWin Code\Trunk\Core'
4> is too old (format 10) to work with client version '1.8.0 (r1490375)' (expects format 31). You need to upgrade the working copy first.

I’m using Visual Studio 2010 express which I thought was the version that the current BBWin was created in but this looks like I might be wrong. Can anyone help with this?

Apologies for not responding on this one earlier.

My thoughts on WinPSClient (which I built up from the first cut Henrik
wrote, and was a great way of learning powershell):

* it needs a bit of work still
* it does have some functions not in the BBWin client
* it can be a resource hog - some apparently builtin powershell cmdlets
end up calling some dodgy underlying mechanisms, and it's not obvious
what without a bit of work. Most are OK however, and the most recent
versions are pretty aggressive about garbage collection. I'm not sure
how many persistent processes are written in powershell - memory leaks
aren't much of an issue for a short run process.
* it doesn't run external scripts - I started looking at Start-Job and
the .Net process management classes but there are so many corner cases
to handle on process termination, overlapping runs, etc.
* the service runner is very crude - start process and ignore it until
sent a stop service signal at which point go looking for it to kill.
Service restart options are irrelevant. Not sure if anything has changed
around running powershell as a service directly.
* because the service runner used is 32-bit, it uses the 32-bit version
of Powershell. There may be a workaround for this, but I couldn't find one.
* it may be better to update BBWin to C#, 64-bit, etc and include the
option of calling Powershell scripts as part of the core client and as
external scripts. I gather this isn't too hard to do from .Net, but not
sure if there are any limitations on requiring code signing of scripts
to do that, or whether system execution policy can be overridden (which
would be a bad thing in some respects).

David.

Henrik,

I would not advise anyone to go with the PS client especially in a production setting. I had it deployed on about 20 servers and ended up going back and removing it. It is VERY much a resource hog when it runs, pegging my servers at 100% processor for 30-60 seconds, and in my plain vanilla environment was unstable to boot. It was some time ago so the details are a bit fuzzy but it caused some major problems for me.

Sorry for the late response.... been on vacation to San Francisco with the family.

FWIW, I've never seen the extreme resource hog behavior some have described with WinPSClient. Now it's entirely possible there were small spikes that I didn't notice, but definitely nothing in the 30+ second range. The systems where I ran this (at a previous job) were mostly Windows Server 2008 R2 and Windows Server 2012 VMs on ESX. Generally speaking the underlying hosts were not overtaxed. For those seeing issues are you running older versions of PowerShell or Windows? Are the machines already operating at a fairly high utilization?

Cheers.

Couldn't tell you what version of PS I was running, but it was the current one of the time. I never saw anything but a small spike reported back to Xymon, so if you're looking there you won't see them. I only saw them when I was watching the task manager on the server itself. The servers were sitting between 10-15% usage generally, and would only spike when the WinPSClient ran. This was on 2008R2 VM's on ESX4 at the time.

Might be with polling the services and processes as well. Just remembered that was part of the instability I saw. Sometimes the services or the processes lists would be incomplete or missing altogether.

The eventlog scanning was unfinished business. The Get-EventLog cmdlet
is very basic - from memory, despite it having options like -After it
would in fact scan the entire event log every time. Get-WinEvent is the
updated version - not sure if that was available on 2003. I'd started
looking at the .Net eventlog stuff as a workaround and that was more
promising, but since I log ship everything to a central server with
syslog and process it there, eventlog stuff was not a high priority with me.

It's my experience with the BBWin client that it's the Event log part that seems to be causing the memory leak. Even when you have a decent set of ignores it still has to scan all the recent messages and on a Domain Controller or some other busy system this can be quite a large amount of messages.

Simple enough to prove. For those of you having memory leak issues, just disable the msgs agent by commenting out the dll section in bbwin.

I don't know how BBWin works in that regard, but yes, MrBig has a
central configuration daemon for this purpose. See here:

BBWin works (mostly) the same as the Xymon client - it downloads the clientlocal.cfg from the server. I say "mostly", because it doesn't work with some settings - particularly event logs.

Does MiniCFG push the config to the clients?

The opposite: the client pulls the client from minicfg.

I took a look at the webpage for mrbig http://mrbig.365-24.se/, and there
it is stated that no one is maintaining the code.

If you still are maintaining it Ulric, do you keep it some where accessible
