Guys:

I'm no longer with Quest, and for those who don't know
me, I'm the guy that wrote the original Big Brother.

If you were an old brother, you can see what happened
in the blog entry here: http://blog.maclawran.ca/what-next

And a great big thanks to Henrik for keeping the
community going.

Ironic - I may end up having to use *your* software :)

	Take care guys!

This answers a lot of questions I've had for many years (I was the
adopter of BB at my workplace, and subsequently Xymon). Thanks for your
work and hope what comes next is more rewarding.

Wow! Great entry. I loved your product, And used it from 1998-2003 -- we had email exchanges about how to deal with ISP's and licensing, and you were incredibly reasonable. Sorry to hear about quest being so unceremonious about the dumping.

How is Rob doing? you guys keep in touch? He we a good guy too..

Great to hear from you, Sean. I ran BB on hp-ux 7 back in the day and was
on the old list. Thanks for a tool that let me spend time on architecture
and projects instead of "making rounds" of my servers every day. Henrik
has done a fantastic job of extending the functionality and making things
scalable, but BB was the swiss army knife of its day.

I hope you find interesting and lucrative work. I suppose if things get
tight, you can always rustle a chicken. ;)

Hi Sean,

I'd like to take the opportunity to thank you for your foresight, I
first used Big Brother at Motorola in 1998 and have instigated it's use
in several other estates.

These include Northern Electric and Gas (BB replaced Patrol), Yorkshire
Electricity (Hobbit replaced foglight.) and most recently at RWE (Xymon
has been installed on the Solaris Estate).

Anyway I stray from the point of the mail, a big thankyou to you and to
Henrik for bringing us to where we are and I hope that fortune smiles on
you going forward.

Regards

Dave Munro

Your program saved me too many times to count when I was a solo admin,
and now here in this bigger shop it was the mainstay of our operations

I still remember being introduced to BB one day by the grizzled Academic

the labs. He was was using it to monitor various University Computer
Operations boxes, and I ended up writing a classic Mac OS scriptlet to
report in the AppleShare IP servers we were responsible for too.

Been a promoter of BB, and then Henrik's re-implementation, at every ISP,
managed server company, and production installation I've been at since.
It's fast, simple, shows what admins care about, and hides what we don't.

Thanks for everything you've done! It's sad to see (and confirm) what

Sean,

Great to see you on the list! I have also been using Big Brother from the beginning added bbgen then migrated to Hobbit and now Xymon. Added Big Brother monitoring as a tool of choice to several past and present jobs that I have had over the years. I remember a time when your thoughts helped me push support for using Big Brother while I was in the Air Force (this was before Quest). Great times! The Big Brother "Keep it Simple" approach has been well maintained in Xymon thanks to Hendrik and you for setting up a great foundation to grow on. Thank you!

Good luck in the future and hope to see you get involved with Xymon.

BTW your resume at http://root.sh is a hoot. It will make for a good cover letter :)

Sean,

I looked at your resume and it is very impressive to say the least. I am more than willing to submit it to ATT if you like. I do not know if you are willing to relocate, but if you are interested please let me know.

The other thing that you mentioned is that you worked on BB for the cloud, I see that Quest has a service now called onDemand which is very cheap compared to GFI, labtech and the like.

I was thinking of putting together this type of service for Xymon. It is a very big market for MSPs and could be very lucrative to say the least. What Xymon is missing which the other ones have are remote control functionality, anti-virus, etc. But, I think this could be added. It might be a nice market to go far. If Xymon can offer this type of service and charge much less than the other ones, I am sure it will be a bigger hit then it is now.

Hi,

Big thanx for writing the original BigBrother code.
I too started with BigBrother and ended with 20+ xymon installation.

Hi Sean,

I've been starting working with BigBrother in 2001 and I followed up with Hobbit/Xymon.

This software is unique in flexibility and monitoring and helped a lot my daily job. What makes it so great about monitoring is its alarm management feature: displaying only what goes wrong (or might go wrong soon) and hiding what's running fine (because we don't care of what's running fine).
I'm surprised to see other monitoring software still don't think monitoring this way: they keep displaying nice graphs in beautiful colors and important alarms are lost in flows of useless SNMP queries. Those tools are at best "statistics gathering" tools and I found no one reaching the level of BB/xymon.

You've been the one who got this smart idea of doing monitoring this way, the one to implement it and make it available worldwide. Thank you very very very much for that.

Good luck for the future and I'm confident you'll find your way. I hope it'll cross Xymon's way....

Cheers,
Francois.

I think that would be a wonderful idea. I just sent kr50 to
user-83c245de1e36@xymon.invalid in aid of that, and encourage others to do
likewise.

I did DKK on a whim, conversion of that amount cost about a nickel.
Henrik might actually prefer dollars or euros.

Another one of your many fans -- my use of BB also dates back to near the beginning (can't even remember not having BB/Xymon not running somewhere!) One point I haven't seen mentioned was the inspired decision to make it easy to extend -- almost immediately I/we started writing little custom scripts to add features.

Thanks for posting and letting us know what's been up. Also, thanks for
all your work on BB. I was introduced to and started using it in '99.
As a consultant and an employee introduced it to a few places. You and
Henrik have both made life easier for your fellow sys admins!
