I've just made the release-candidate of version 4.2.2 available
for download on Sourceforge.

https://sourceforge.net/project/showfiles.php?group_id=128058&package_id=140220&release_id=644075

This is how I would expect the interim 4.2.2 release to be.
It includes the following changes from 4.2.0:

*) Due to the Hobbit project being renamed to Xymon (for
   legal reasons), the documentation has been updated to
   refer to this as the name of the project.
*) All patches from the "all-in-one" patch have been applied
*) Patches from Debian and Mandriva source archives and
   elsewhere have been merged, fixing:
   - The "Critical Systems" configuration report would crash
     when hosts were in NKview.cfg, but no NK tags were in
     bb-hosts (from Mandriva)
   - SSL certificates with 4-digit expiration years would
     crash the network tester (from Debian)
   - Newer OpenLDAP versions have a different API, so
     the LDAP test code would not build correctly (from
     Debian)
   - Old Big Brother clients report disk output with no
     header line (from Debian)
   - The bb-hosts syntax for HTTP testing via a proxy
     could not support https target-URL's (from Debian)
   - Certain SuSE versions would not be identified by
     the Linux client as such (only affected OS name
     displayed in the "info" status).
*) Support for sending custom graph data in a "trends"
   data message (from
   http://www.hswn.dk/hobbiton/2007/01/msg00236.html)
*) Split-NCV and TRACKMAX support for custom graphs (from
   http://www.hobbitmon.com/hobbiton/2007/03/msg00368.htm).
*) Support for the "BBWin" client http://bbwin.sf.net/
   in centralized (server-side) configuration mode.
   Based on BBWin v. 0.12.
*) Support for the "hobbit-perl-client" add-on
   http://hobbit-perl-client.sf.net/ .
   Based on perl-http-client v1.15
*) Support for the "Devmon" SNMP data collector
   http://devmon.sf.net/ based on Devmon 0.3.0.

A last-minute update for Devmon was missed in the RC1
source file, so Devmon users should grab the latest
hobbitd/rrd/do_devmon.c source from
http://hobbitmon.svn.sourceforge.net/viewvc/hobbitmon/branches/4.2.2/hobbitd/rrd/do_devmon.c?revision=6002
and copy to hobbitd/rrd/do_devmon.c . This will be included
in the final 4.2.2 release.

Please test this if you can, and report problems to the
mailing list. Since all of this code has been in use for
quite some time, I would not expect a lot of problems.
So the target date for the 4.2.2 release is Dec. 10.

Hi Henrik, maybe You have also included the patch for a bug we called: "Stop after not shown in the Info-Page". Alexander Bech posted a patch in the following message: http://www.hswn.dk/hobbiton/2008/11/msg00477.html If You had already included this patch, then all is very fine.

I'm not running 4.2 code, but looking at the source for areas I have had
some interest in in 4.3, I think there are a few bugs in this:

hobbitd\rrd\do_ncv.c
1) NCV or SPLITNCV will not recognise signed values.
Line 75: skip past '-' or '+' before strspn call.

2) Potential inconsistent results if SPLITNCV datasource name starts with a
non-alphanum.
Line113: check for outidx==0 before checking dsname[outidx-1]

3) Memory leak in SPLITNCV.
Line 190: call xfree(params[i]) prior to setting params[i] = NULL.
paridx really ought to be reset to 1 here also. As it stands it is reset on
the next iteration, but that's really ugly.

4) Lines 198-202 are either unnecessary or dangerous. params[2] is
uninitialised at start of routine (line30), or when reinitialised (line
130). This section could possibly attempt to free random values in memory if
the routine failed to find any valid SPLITNCV lines in input. Unnecessary if
valid SPLITNCV lines found.

5) This routine will not recognise input lines with &{RED|YELLOW|GREEN}
prior to the dsname. Maybe this was a 4.3 functional improvement? (4.3 code
sits between lines 72 and 73 of this file).

hobbitd\client\bbwin.c
6) Timediff from BBWIN clients with central configuration.
The BBWIN client 0.12 reports its epoch as whole seconds only, without the
decimal part. The current code fails if no decimal part is supplied. So in
hobbitd\client\bbwin.c, function bbwin_clock_report() replace the lines
186-7
                p = strstr(clockstr, "epoch:");
                if (p && (sscanf(p, "epoch: %ld.%ld", (long int
*)&clockval.tv_sec, (long int *)&clockval.tv_usec) == 2)) {
by
                int fields;

                p = strstr(clockstr, "epoch:");
                clockval.tv_usec = 0;
                if (!p)
                      ; /* do nothing further */
                else if( (fields = sscanf(p, "epoch: %ld.%ld", (long int
*)&clockval.tv_sec, (long int *)&clockval.tv_usec)) < 1)
                     dbgprintf("Failed to parse time from '%s'\n", p);
                else {

This will now accommodate either decimal or integer timestamps

Haven't tried the 4.2.2.RC1 yet, but one bug I've noticed in 4.2 involves
the alert rules. If I have an alert rule like this:

HOST=machine,machine-1
    <something>

The info page for "machine" where it shows the "Alerting" rules will list
multiple duplicate entries for "conn", "cpu", etc. However, "machine-1"
will show correctly.

I haven't fully determined if this corresponds to actually getting duplicate
alerts, but it would be nice to have it display properly on the Info page.
My guess is that the same reason I have to put a \ in front of - in the
bbcombotest.cfg file is why this isn't working as expected.

Alternatively, if that is by design, [and escaping fixes it], I think the
man pages should be updated to make a note about special characters just as
- that need to be escaped. (I know it's by design for the bbcombotest.cfg
file as mentioned in the man pages now, but I haven't seen such a note about
the hobbit-alerts.cfg file).

Shouldn't Hobbit be changed to Xymon in the headers.
Which headers ? The mailing-list ones ? Yeah, it probably should ...
but I'll bet it will break some people's procmail scripts.

Minor issue:

Have some common footers got missed? Copying them from

It seems to be something that Subversion does differently from the old
RCS system I was using - all of those header-files are in fact just
symlinks to the bb_footer file.

I'm going over all the reports about bugs that are pending for the 4.2.2

this:

Merged:
* Devmon patch from trunk
* hobbitping endless loop on network send failure - backport from trunk
* Darwin user-info query by configure scrips.
http://www.hswn.dk/hobbiton/2008/02/msg00173.html
* Limit size of alert-message texts sent to a script to 4 KB.
http://www.hswn.dk/hobbiton/2008/01/msg00015.html
Not merged (requires further analysis):
* min/max duration of alerts on info page.
http://www.hswn.dk/hobbiton/2008/11/msg00415.html
* IGNORE pattern problem.
http://www.hswn.dk/hobbiton/2008/11/msg00416.html
* Bug-list from Graham Nayler
http://www.hswn.dk/hobbiton/2008/12/msg00011.html

I might do an RC2 for Monday, but only if some of the bugfixes are not
"obviously correct".

Hi Henrik,

Something that our helpdesk team point out a long time ago (see http://www.hswn.dk/hobbiton/2007/03/msg00304.html)

Assuming following pages layout :

page backup Backup
group-only conn|nsr Backup
1.2.3.4  host1      # prefer nsr
page local Local Tests
group-only cpu|disk|info|logs|memory|msgs|procs| Solaris
1.2.3.4  host1      # noconn

Now the problem :

The icon resuming the status for page "Backup" is "recent-green". If we click on it, the subpage shows that both icons for "conn" and "nsr" are "diamond-green". The top level green-state for "Backup" does not summarize for the grouped tests underneath : it summarize all tests for host1 which is not what we would expect.

To makes things clearer, I have tried to attach screen-shots but this is slightly above the 100k limit on this list ;-)

Could you check if the "client data" reported from the client also has
the lines truncated ? I cannot see anything that would cause the data
to be truncated, so for a start it would be nice to know if it happens
on the client or on the server.

Fixed, I'll send that patch upstream.

Thanks. As I said, it didn't affect me, but it looks as if it'll be of
benefit to some others.

It seems to be something that Subversion does differently from the old
RCS system I was using - all of those header-files are in fact just
symlinks to the bb_footer file.
I was seeing the same issue, but once I manually fixed the symlinks, everything was OK.

The URL in the foot still points to http://hobbitmon.sourceforge.net/, not sure if that is already known.

Lots of references to "hobbit" in the rpm dir in the sources file, too. I'd make a patch but I'm not sure what needs to stay "hobbit" and what can safely change to xymon.

Unfortunately that cannot be changed yet. Sourceforge has suspended
project renaming currently.

Right now I'm being cautious about it, and just changing it in
the documentation and the generated web-pages. No filename changes
at this point - I don't want to break stuff just before releasing
a new version.

Henrik,

Would you mind taking a look at my problem above with footers and headers?

You can correct this yourself by creating the symlinks for the footers.
  I just did it yesterday.

In the web dir (~xymon/server/web on my setup), create symlinks like this:

ln -s bb_footer bb2_footer
ln -s bb_footer event_footer
ln -s bb_footer findhost_footer
ln -s bb_footer hostgraphs_footer

and so on...

After that your xymon page will just work.

Anyway, the missing files have been added now to the SVN repository,
so this problem should be over and done with now. I don't know why
the conversion from RCS->SVN didn't include them, but they're
present now.

You can correct this yourself by creating the symlinks for the footers.
 I just did it yesterday.
Anyway, the missing files have been added now to the SVN repository,
so this problem should be over and done with now. I don't know why
the conversion from RCS->SVN didn't include them, but they're

This is how I would expect the interim 4.2.2 release to be.
It includes the following changes from 4.2.0:

*) Due to the Hobbit project being renamed to Xymon (for
  legal reasons), the documentation has been updated to
  refer to this as the name of the project.
*) All patches from the "all-in-one" patch have been applied
*) Patches from Debian and Mandriva source archives and
  elsewhere have been merged, fixing:
  - The "Critical Systems" configuration report would crash
    when hosts were in NKview.cfg, but no NK tags were in
    bb-hosts (from Mandriva)
  - SSL certificates with 4-digit expiration years would
    crash the network tester (from Debian)
  - Newer OpenLDAP versions have a different API, so
    the LDAP test code would not build correctly (from
    Debian)
  - Old Big Brother clients report disk output with no
    header line (from Debian)
  - The bb-hosts syntax for HTTP testing via a proxy
    could not support https target-URL's (from Debian)
  - Certain SuSE versions would not be identified by
    the Linux client as such (only affected OS name
    displayed in the "info" status).
*) Support for sending custom graph data in a "trends"
  data message (from
  http://www.hswn.dk/hobbiton/2007/01/msg00236.html)
*) Split-NCV and TRACKMAX support for custom graphs (from
  http://www.hobbitmon.com/hobbiton/2007/03/msg00368.htm).
*) Support for the "BBWin" client http://bbwin.sf.net/
  in centralized (server-side) configuration mode.
  Based on BBWin v. 0.12.
*) Support for the "hobbit-perl-client" add-on
  http://hobbit-perl-client.sf.net/ .
  Based on perl-http-client v1.15
*) Support for the "Devmon" SNMP data collector
  http://devmon.sf.net/ based on Devmon 0.3.0.

A last-minute update for Devmon was missed in the RC1
source file, so Devmon users should grab the latest
hobbitd/rrd/do_devmon.c source from
http://hobbitmon.svn.sourceforge.net/viewvc/hobbitmon/branches/4.2.2/hobbitd/rrd/do_devmon.c?revision=6002
and copy to hobbitd/rrd/do_devmon.c . This will be included
in the final 4.2.2 release.

Please test this if you can, and report problems to the
mailing list. Since all of this code has been in use for
quite some time, I would not expect a lot of problems.
So the target date for the 4.2.2 release is Dec. 10.

Yeah, I also noticed this afternoon that the manpages and contrib
directories didn't make it into 'svn co' for either trunk for 4.2.2
branches. The demotool directory also didn't make it into the 4.2.2 branch.
There are various other files missing from 'svn co', but I don't have an
easy way of listing them textually. What I don't know is if Henrik did this
for efficiency / speed of checking out svn or what. In any case, I think
it's better to check everything out - if it hasn't changed, it won't get
updated so it's only a one time thing.

Kind regards,

Unfortunately that cannot be changed yet. Sourceforge has suspended
project renaming currently.
Lots of references to "hobbit" in the rpm dir in the sources file, too.
 I'd make a patch but I'm not sure what needs to stay "hobbit" and what
can safely change to xymon.
Right now I'm being cautious about it, and just changing it in
the documentation and the generated web-pages. No filename changes
at this point - I don't want to break stuff just before releasing
a new version.
According to Mandriva package policy, I already need to change many things from hobbit to xymon (user name, directory names it is installed to, init script etc. etc.). It would be quite a bit easier to handle this once in a %triggerpostun hobbit, than to handle multiple cases with multiple %triggerpostun, some versioned, some not, moving different files/dirs at different times, and make it relatively transparent to the average user who just gets a new xymon package in the next release of their favourite distro ....

(There sort of are equivalents to symlinks on Windows, but they're pretty

  This is how I would expect the interim 4.2.2 release to be.
  It includes the following changes from 4.2.0:

  *) Due to the Hobbit project being renamed to Xymon (for
    legal reasons), the documentation has been updated to
    refer to this as the name of the project.
  *) All patches from the "all-in-one" patch have been applied
  *) Patches from Debian and Mandriva source archives and
    elsewhere have been merged, fixing:
    - The "Critical Systems" configuration report would crash
      when hosts were in NKview.cfg, but no NK tags were in
      bb-hosts (from Mandriva)
    - SSL certificates with 4-digit expiration years would
      crash the network tester (from Debian)
    - Newer OpenLDAP versions have a different API, so
      the LDAP test code would not build correctly (from
      Debian)
    - Old Big Brother clients report disk output with no
      header line (from Debian)
    - The bb-hosts syntax for HTTP testing via a proxy
      could not support https target-URL's (from Debian)
    - Certain SuSE versions would not be identified by
      the Linux client as such (only affected OS name
      displayed in the "info" status).
  *) Support for sending custom graph data in a "trends"
    data message (from
    http://www.hswn.dk/hobbiton/2007/01/msg00236.html)
  *) Split-NCV and TRACKMAX support for custom graphs (from
    http://www.hobbitmon.com/hobbiton/2007/03/msg00368.htm).
  *) Support for the "BBWin" client http://bbwin.sf.net/
    in centralized (server-side) configuration mode.
    Based on BBWin v. 0.12.
  *) Support for the "hobbit-perl-client" add-on
    http://hobbit-perl-client.sf.net/ .
    Based on perl-http-client v1.15
  *) Support for the "Devmon" SNMP data collector
    http://devmon.sf.net/ based on Devmon 0.3.0.

  A last-minute update for Devmon was missed in the RC1
  source file, so Devmon users should grab the latest
  hobbitd/rrd/do_devmon.c source from
  http://hobbitmon.svn.sourceforge.net/viewvc/hobbitmon/branches/4.2.2/hobbitd/rrd/do_devmon.c?revision=6002
  and copy to hobbitd/rrd/do_devmon.c . This will be included
  in the final 4.2.2 release.

  Please test this if you can, and report problems to the
  mailing list. Since all of this code has been in use for
  quite some time, I would not expect a lot of problems.
  So the target date for the 4.2.2 release is Dec. 10.

  Henrik

If i make an easy "configure/make/make install" or
use my own hobbit.spec or now i use the first time the build/makerpm.sh script,

the html-man-pages are not be generated ?
I am also seeing this issue. I just checked out and built 4.2.2 from SVN this morning and html manpages were not built.

No, they are built by me as part of the release - not everyone
has the "man2html" tool installed. I just haven't updated the
html-pages yet (will do so before the final release, to get the
date right).

Certainly. There are no incompatible changes to the bbnet protocol.

I'm using Hobbit 4.2.3 and for some pages, I monitore, I get the
following message in bbtest.

WARNING: Invalid source IP www.mypage.com for test (null), using default

To be honest, I don't understand this error message, specially the "test (null)"
Looks like there running something wrong with this test.
I can ping the page from hobbit/xymon server and also other page monitoring is working well!
