xymon notes editor

I am trying to install xymon notes editor but am coming up with an
error. When I click on the administration tab and then edit notes, I get
an internal server error.

As a side note, when the 500 internal server error page shows up, it
mentions to contact server administrator. When is that set?

The problem and the administrator is web server related. I'm guessing
you're using Apache HTTPD, so share with us the tail of

Looks like you are missing a perl module. (FromText.pm) See if you can locate that module on the filesystem, if so call it by full path or modify the env. If the module is not on the system (which seems most likely) then you will need to go to CPAN get the module and install it.

The server admin is defined in your httpd.conf file (in the main config and possibly in any vhost entries you've created).

Was this installed with a package or compiled from source?

My first guess is that the problem lies with PCRE.

Hi,

I don't use this script but I took a look at it this AM on a Linux box with the requisite modules installed. In the change log for http://xymonton.trantor.org/doku.php/addons:hobbitnotes I see that 'use strict' was added and a routine to flush buffers was added shortly after, but the $cfh var was not declared, $oldbar/strict rewritten below. Until the script properly checks out it will never run under apache/perl. This said, you can try the following edit to see if it helps you, again, I don't run this so I can't be of much more help.

perl -cw bbnote_editor.cgi
Global symbol "$oldbar" requires explicit package name at bbnote_editor.cgi line 224.
Global symbol "$cfh" requires explicit package name at bbnote_editor.cgi line 225.
Global symbol "$oldbar" requires explicit package name at bbnote_editor.cgi line 248.
Global symbol "$cfh" requires explicit package name at bbnote_editor.cgi line 249.
bbnote_editor.cgi had compilation errors.

edit:
# Main
#local $oldbar = $|;
my $oldbar = $|;
#$cfh = select (STDOUT);
my $cfh = select (STDOUT);
$| = 1;

perl -cw bbnote_editor.cgi
bbnote_editor.cgi syntax OK

Hi Galen,

I have been trying to get your Xymon Notes Editor working. I have fixed a
number of issues in the code or with your instructions, but I'm stuck on
probably the last issue.

Most of the issues may be caused by your code getting munged when you
uploaded it to Xymonton - I'm not sure. For example I needed to add a few
carriage returns:
Line 24 and before 'HTML':
Can't find string terminator "HTML" anywhere before EOF at
/usr/share/xymon/cgi-secure/bbnote_editor.cgi line 161
As well as somewhere around:
Unmatched right curly bracket at
/usr/share/xymon/cgi-secure/bbnote_editor.cgi line 46, at end of line

But I still have this error and I'm not sure where the issue really is
because this is the end of the file:
Missing right curly or square bracket at
/usr/share/xymon/cgi-secure/bbnote_editor.cgi line 234, at end of line

With the instructions, there should have been instructions to install
perl-CGI and create the www/notes directory.

Can you help with EOF right clurly or square bracket error please? And /
or try re-uploading to Xymon, or posting a copy of the code for download
either from this list or from somewhere else. A download saves time if
anyone else wants to use this too.

Many thanks, SebA

It's been a while since I even looked at that code. Let me refresh myself
on it (and push it to github as well.

Ahhh...this is one of the few scripts I rescued from Deadcat since I had
made use of it a while ago...hopefully, it's compatible with the Terabithia
rpms. I'll need to try it locally to see if I can rep what you see.

Ok...I found several things that needed some love. It's not perfect but it
does at least run for me. The instructions could use a bit of improvement
as well. I'm not 100% sure which code notes path is legit...may take a
little playing. The new code is on github (https://github.com/solitaryr/
xymon_notes). If I can find the time, I'll see what I can do to improve
it...especially in regards to better integration into the Xymon ecosystem.
I may even see what it might take to integrate directly into Xymon instead
of an add-on...but C is a distant memory...

Hi Galen,

Most of the issues may be caused by your code getting munged when you
uploaded it to Xymonton - I'm not sure. For example I needed to add a few
carriage returns:
Line 24 and before 'HTML':
Can't find string terminator "HTML" anywhere before EOF at
/usr/share/xymon/cgi-secure/bbnote_editor.cgi line 161
As well as somewhere around:
Unmatched right curly bracket at /usr/share/xymon/cgi-secure/bbnote_editor.cgi

Thanks for your work on this Galen. I started my response the next day,
but I've been too busy to finish it until now.

Here's two fixes in one line for Xymon 4.3 (adding SECURE and with the
change of name for the cgi script):
        <a class="inner"
href="$XYMONSERVERSECURECGIURL/xymnote_editor.cgi">Edit
Notes</a><span class="invis"> | </span>

Also in order to get the host link to display in the main Xymon page, with
the latest terabithia RPM installed, I had to:
$ cd /etc/xymon/data
$ sudo ln -s /usr/share/xymon/www/notes notes

I have to admit I tried to get your notes editor installed so I could take
a look at it as there were no screenshots on Xymonton. I was disappointed
that there was no toolbar for formatting text. I'm sure this is just a
minor thing, but it means I'm inclined to try this solution instead:
http://www.it-eckert.com/blog/2014/how-to-integrate-xymon-with-a-documentation-system/

I also note that the templates only apply when saving notes pages, so any
change to the template does not take effect until resaving the note page
for a host. Slightly disappointing too, but to be expected I suppose given
the location of the template.

That said, I have it all working now, so that's great.

Thanks again and kind regards,

SebA

Hey SebA,

Thanks for the feedback and catching the missed url paths. I'll look into
making those updates...I'm not even sure if the original author is even
still around. I was actually toying around with the idea of adding TinyMCE
or something like that. I've also seen that there are some html code
snippets that Chrome and Firefox choke on...badly...so I expect I'll need
to figure out how to make that better. I'm also planning to drop the BB
specific bits since they aren't that much different and it's not clear how
much BB is even used in the Xymon community...especially the server side.
I did run into the same symlink issue you mentioned and just haven't
updated the doc yet.

One other thing...what kind of screenshots? It's basically just dropping
files in place and editing some Xymon bits.

I started down this path a few years ago. After traveling a bit, I realized I was creating a wiki inside Xymon. At that point, I stopped :P

We now use a special segment of our existing wiki to hold notes for Xymon hosts. The pages in that segment may reference each other, and have included and embedded content. We then export the wiki content (as one would if creating a static, or cached version), and import it into a directory on our Xymon server. The export/import happens as a regular xymon task.

We use HTML in our "DESCR" tag in the hosts.cfg to link each host to the appropriate local page of notes from the wiki. By use a .default. tags associated with display groups, we can re-use pages of notes for several hosts.

We leverage the authentication, editing, and history function of our wiki. While publishing static content from our xymon server means we aren't depending on the wiki at 2am.

Thanks John. Those are good ideas. I might look into doing the same or
