Scratch that mail - I setuid on the fping binary (chmod 4755 /usr/local/sbin/fping), changed the hobbitserver.cfg accordingly and it is now working as expected.
Just a question, have I created a 'security hole' or is this what is supposed to be done anyway?

I used sudo to grant fping as root and change the script referring to fping as "sudo fping".
This is still a security hole if fping binary contain Trojan hose code.
