Xymon mailing list now on a new server (but hopefully everything works!)

Just to let you know that everything has been moved, and hopefully it should be running as usual. Regards, Henrik

Henrik, I just realised that a couple of my recent replies to mailing list posts went only to the originator and not to the mailing list. Maybe this new mailing list isn't adding a Reply-To header pointing to itself, or something?? Thanks, Ralph Mitchell

The reply-to is the sender. Use Reply to all or include xymon at xymon.com This is usually to prevent those dumb annoying vacation responders. Josh Luthman Office: XXX-XXX-XXXX Direct: XXX-XXX-XXXX XXXX Wayne St Suite XXXX Troy, OH XXXXX

OK. Before the change in mailing systems there was a "Reply-to: xymon at xymon.com", so hitting reply just worked. I'll try to get used to using reply-to-all instead. Thanks, Ralph 2011/3/8 Josh Luthman <user-4c45a83f15cb@xymon.invalid>

Hi Ralph,

I just realised that a couple of my recent replies to mailing list posts went only to the originator and not to the mailing list. Maybe this new mailing list isn't adding a Reply-To header pointing to itself, or something??
That is correct. It is something that can be changed, and there has been a long discussion about whether mailing lists should mess with the reply-to header or not. My mail-program automatically recognizes that xymon at xymon.com is a mailing list, and presents me with a "Reply" (= reply to author) and "Reply to List" (= reply to the list address) button. So it isn't a problem for me. I think that has become much more common over the past few years. (For those who are curious, I recently switched from Mutt to Thunderbird - giving up on the text-only interface after some 25 years). If you don't have such a feature, the "reply to all" usually works. I won't say it has been set in stone and won't change, but I want some complaints before I change it. Regards, Henrik

Mutt to Thunderbird? That has to be weird, especially after 25 years!!! This list is primarily a more technologically advanced so I don't see many (if any at all) of the auto reply things set up here. There are other lists where we had to change to what this list is now. Nothing like getting 500 "I'm on vacation" emails rubbing in your face and filling your inbox =) I would be one to complain if you were to switch away from what we have now. I think it should be left as is.

I started out with Elm, actually, collecting mail over 2400 baud dial-up uucp-link. (Gosh, I'm getting old...) These days there are just too many HTML e-mails with embedded links, images etc that text-based e-mail cannot handle. And since I upgraded my mail system I can now access all of it via a web interface, so going for a graphical mail reader seemed like the obvious solution. Thunderbird seems ok. There are some quirks, so maybe I'll try some other mail client. Fortunately they all work with IMAP. Regards, Henrik

I moved to Gmail around the summer of 2004. Have not moved since. I strongly recommend it. It has an IMAP server, but no client. Before Gmail I had Thunderbird in the pre v1 days. Wasn't bad. Before Thunderbird was Eudora. Now that's an email client! Never had to deal with a command line client. Not experienced enough I guess =)

Ditto. I send all my professional mailing-list mail to one Gmail account and all my personal mailing-list mail to another. Keeps my home and personal mailboxes free of distractions, and Gmail has a good interface for skimming and filtering large amounts of incoming mail. Plus it seems cleaner to participate in mailing list discussions without bringing my employer's name into it (although Gmail would allow that if I preferred)

One thing I noticed that is not 'normal': Henrik's surname is now displayed
properly! Previously it was not, and I also would get an e-mail from
SpamAssassin complaining that:
Our content checker found
Non-encoded 8-bit data (char C3 hex): From: Henrik "St\303\270rner"
<user-b8ae5fbe2c2a@xymon.invalid
etc. The advantage though was that it was easy to see when Henrik was
posting without expanding conversational threads! :D
Kind regards,
SebA

<user-b8ae5fbe2c2a@xymon.invalidYeah, it's always been a bit of a bother to have a name with those weird non-ascii letters in it :-) Some mail clients displayed it properly, others did not. It looked weird to me even, if I was logged in from work. Thunderbird (well - Ubuntu + Thunderbird, actually) does everything in UTF-something, so it ends up being all right and properly encoded.
