Hello group,

Craig Cook pointed me to this product. After a 8 year absence from
admin/monitoring (last was bb1.8c) I am back. I was working on setting
up bb and noticed nothing new at dead cat.

So here I am missed the hobbit/bbmon generation. I have 200 plus Cisco
7609's I monitor and wanted to see some of the mrtg setups folks might
be using. I had bbmrtg setup but never really was happy with it. So
before I dive into setting it up I wanted to look at some options and
samples.

Today I am going to see if I can port over the bb-ospf.pl script. So far
I really like the xymon product, it is like my old friend BB yet has the
changes I always wanted to get to!

Be sure to check out xymonton.trantor.org (hope to rename it to
xymonton.org this week). It doesn't have as many monitors as deadcat
but since you can easily convert BB scripts to Xymon (even use them
natively in some cases), it's not the obstacle it may appear to be.

I don't use mrtg, I prefer devmon, as it integrates with Xymon without any
effort.

You could replace this with a devmon template/test.

(We don't run OSPF or BGP, so I haven't been able to implement myself).

I have Devmon running and I am still getting my head wrapped around the
logic. I am working on an OSPF test now. I am a bit rusty and I have
not spent much time in SNMP tool building. So I am having a blast
learning and rubbing off the admin/scripting skills.
When I started this project I pulled out all my old code and custom
tools for BB and looked at them and commented, "I wrote this stuff?,
What the heck does this do?"

Thanks for the comments.

You don't need to build an SNMP tool.

You don't need to script either.

Please see docs/TEMPLATES in the source distribution of devmon.

Afternoon,

I am new to Xymon monitoring and i have a problem. The xymon monitoring we are using worked perfect until yesterday.
One of the linux clients which is monitored by xymon doesn't give any report any more about cpu and disk and so on, the conn check is just working fine.
This happened after de client yesterday afternoon needed a hard reboot. Is their a way I can reset it so everything goes back to green again??

I really appreciate if someone can help me out with this.

Thanks in advance

Hi Durk,

is the XYmon client up and running on that machine?
Maybe it was not added to the init.d and rc?.d directories or to the
service management with chkconfig (depends on what Linux you are running).
Can you please check?
How did you install the client, made from source or from rpm?

Your Apache works OK otherwise? Do you get any error message on your

What packages did you install?

(Please keep the List in your replies.)

I haven't installed a recent package on a Xymon server. I think you only
need the server package, and it includes the client components, so you
should be OK, but I just wanted to be sure.

The Xymon server package installs an Apache config snippet to be included.
I think it will be /etc/httpd/conf.d/xymon-apache.conf or similar. But it
won't get activated until Apache is restarted, and I'm not sure if the
package restarts Apache for you.

Installed packages, I just did a dnf list xymon and installed the only
xymon package available. That then downloaded and installed other
dependencies.

Thats basically all I have done though, are further steps required ?

Could it be because I hadn't started xymon ? I've found xymon in
/usr/bin, but I'm struggling with the correct syntax to start it off

Yes, its the default one for fedora 22. I can browse to the host and
get the welcome page, http://host/xymon brings up an empty directory
listing with no files.

I've checked for the xymon.conf in the /etc/httpd/conf.d directory and
even tried uncommenting this line :-

DocumentRoot /var/www/xymon

but that has made no difference so I will replace the #

I've installed xymon on fedora 22 using the terabithia.repo. The
installation completed without errors.

Do I need to take further steps to get it working ? I can't seem to
bring up a xymon webpage.

You only need a client on hosts where you want to monitor things like disk,
memory, CPU and other "internal" states and metrics. External states, such
as whether a web server is responding to connections on port 80, can be
tested by the Xymon server without any client installed on the host.

Terabithia has a "xymon-client" package that you would install on a host
(unless it's the Xymon server, in which case you don't install xymon-client
because it's already included).

Thank you so much, I now see my xymon display.

I'll read through some documentation now on how to add services I would
like to monitor.

Could you clarify that I need to run a xymon client on every host I wish
to monitor ? if this is correct, where should I get the client from ?

On Fedora 22, it'll be systemd controlled, however "/sbin/service xymon

If something truly unusual happened, you can reset the systemd unit file

Tailing the log files in /var/log/xymon/ (specifically, xymonlaunch.log
and xymond.log) might provide useful info as we...
