SIP & VoIP

Hi All, Has anyone looked into testing SIP/VoIP devices? (handsets, gateways, etc) I haven't seen it mentioned yet, and it's something I will need to consider in the not too distant future (as I'm sure many others will too)! I expect to get a call about it one day, so I am hoping Hobbit will have a place monitoring this too. -Gerard Lill

Not that I know of. It's a technology that I know absolutely nothing about - what protocols are involved, how you communicate with the devices, what needs to be up and running, how you monitor availability etc. This looks like a good place to start: http://www.voip-info.org/tiki-index.php?page=voip-info.org

The ambition (for me) certainly is to have Hobbit be able to monitor all of your IT systems. Yeah, I know that's pretty ambitious, but it never hurts to set high goals :-) Regards, Henrik

Joking aside, that is exactly the page I was looking at when the email came in! Now you know of one person looking into it at the moment; although like yourself I am totally new to this. It's *supposed* to be simple, easy, etc; but I feel confident I'll feel dumber than when I'm started. (at the moment - if Hobbit doesn't monitor it, we don't deploy it; and we haven't had to say "No" yet; so I think your pretty close to your ambitions!!) Cheers.

I literally stumbled across a local (danish) website doing this a few days ago, and the guy who runs it has promised to send me some links to libraries and code that can be used to test SIP gateways. So I hope to have this in Hobbit soon. Henrik

That's really excellent news. I also am just about to finish the collection of WMI tests for Windoze. I think we got a bit carried away, but I will post more information this week or next. Course, I don't suppose there are too many Microsoft users in here, but it might be useful to someone :) -Gerard.
