I'm looking for a hobbit client package for FreeBSD.. is there such a
thing? Or perhaps a tarball for ports? I'm not so much into how FreeBSD
does these things, from Gentoo I'm used to having an overlay for my own
packages, but I've never heard of such functionality in FreeBSD ports.

Just grab the regular Hobbit sourcefile and run "./configure --client".

I'll take that as a "no, there is no package for FreeBSD" :)
