Well, I don't know about the rest of you, but I am finding delays of up to 6 hours between message sent, and message appearing on the list.

Most IRC channels are like 80% social and 20% topic discussion =) It would
be a place for Hobbit users to gather and offer help when someone manages to
stumble in.

Vernon, that's because all of your postings to the list use a one-time
sender address like "prvs=Vernon.Everett=user-cb0fe9a6ccf7@xymon.invalid" .
Meaning I have to manually approve the mail before it gets passed to

Perfect example.
This arrived here now - 15h25 local time.
I sent it 12h49 local time.

That's over 2 hours delay.

I have no idea what freenode.net is or does, but if it's an IRC server
then it's not going to work for a large number of us who use and
maintain Hobbit in a work environment. I haven't worked for many
companies in my time but I can guarantee that none of them allowed/allow
IRC within their network, no matter how it is tunnelled.

Don't know what it is either but it is block via our corparate filtering. Most interactive things like chat and email services like yahoo gmail are block. Though they missed a few obscure thing.

If a large proportion of admins can use it then go ahead, knock yourselves out.

First off please note most IRC channels don't get questions answered
within a few hours. While it does happen from time to time it should
not be expected.

IRC is a weird thing to block intentionally. SSH tunneling easily
avoids this, though.

Agree, one thing I like IRC about is the TCP oriented chatting(communication).
You get yes or no answer. not like email(UDP broadcasting), you don't know
the recepients actually read the email of your request/questions.

I was able to use Xchat(for windows) to pass internal firewall.
but beaware it will show your company's firewall domain address.
Another way is to use command line irc client from one's home network.

I'd also appreciate if a hobbit channel was setup on freenode. There are
many times when I've wished for it.

And, there are many other user communities which have found having channels
invaluable, including VMware admins (208 active users atm) and Cisco NetEngs
(~300 active users).

Certainly, monitoring isn't any less important - although, it's a testament
to hobbit's reliability as it is that a mailing list has been sufficient to
get by to date.

Regards,

Matt

First off please note most IRC channels don't get questions answered
within a few hours. While it does happen from time to time it should
not be expected.
Agree, one thing I like IRC about is the TCP oriented
chatting(communication).
You get yes or no answer. not like email(UDP broadcasting), you don't know
the recepients actually read the email of your request/questions.
IRC is a weird thing to block intentionally. SSH tunneling easily
avoids this, though.
I was able to use Xchat(for windows) to pass internal firewall.
but beaware it will show your company's firewall domain address.
Another way is to use command line irc client from one's home network.

allowed/allow IRC within their network, no matter how it is tunnelled.
Sheesh, talk about negative. If you can't use it thats tough, don't
nay-say
others that can. I for one am in favour of this.
I was being realistic rather than negative. If only 5% of Hobbit admins
Are able to use this service then is it going to be that useful?

If a large proportion of admins can use it then go ahead, knock
yourselves
out.

No objections at all. But I probably won't join an IRC channel to
do Hob... (err) Xymon support; I've never been fond of instant-
messaging systems.

Probably getting too old for that :-)

Let's make a #xymon and bring all Xymon/shire/Hobbit/etc related discussion.

Who knows how to work that Freenode magic?

Same here.

I try to apply for a xymon channel via following url.

http://freenode.net/group_contact_form.shtml

I filled in all the need fields and hit submit.
But all of this look like just a registration of group contact.
The actual creation of #xymon channel is not clear to me.
I am using ChatZilla and type in #xymon, and looks like
I am in the channel by myself. can other people with irc client try to
join irc://freenode/xymon ?

Or better yet, can some body with experience of setting up irc channel
step forward to do the work ?

#xymon is open for chatting to kill your spare time.

But seriously, lets make #xymon a good place to ask questions
and extend the hospitality here to #xymon.

Thanks for pushling and myon's help setting up the channel.
