I think there's a certain amount of "who can we sue if it breaks"
mentality. If a company contracts to pay $$$$ for a product, that gives
them a big stick to beat the supplier with in the event that something goes
wrong, to either fix the product or get their money back. If the product is
free, worked on by a couple of guys in their spare time, there's no contract
and no comeback if it breaks.

That's a bit of a fallacious argument. How does a commercial product

and (if so inclined) are able to fix the shortcomings ourselves.

This is a off topic of xymon logo.

But this bring up another issue/concern of mine(as an Unix admin) twoward
Xymon.

"Not able to pay for Xymon for support service from a company"

This is feedback/comment I got from mangement (of mine).

Trying to understand why, from their perspective and I think I got the
answer as following.

Management want to avoid the lock-in from admin also. They want your
in-depth knowledge
of the tool become a serivce that management can get from other sources,
not just in-house admins.

That's always been one of the things I've never understood about
companies...they don't think they are getting worthwhile software unless
they pay through the nose for it. Trust you admins and let them decide if
it's worthwhile. They're the ones that will be using it day to day. I'll
be the first to admit that there are some FOSS projects that aren't worth
what you pay or them but they either get forked by people who care to make
it better or they disappear altogether.

Yes ! Y our barely ok, Corporate type hate "cute" logos./icons and the'
re distrustful enough when not
ask to pay $1000s for a product.

Agree, no rush but I hope this task should be going on at lesser priority.

see xym.jpg in this attached email(it is only 16KB) so I think it is ok to
be sent via this email.
I don't know engough about GIMP yet. I hope the "X" has four hobbit colors
in the devided four sections.
let me know if you want the xym.xcf gimp file to continue the work.

I think logo design should be designed by the icon professional designer.
I am willing to pitch in money for this cost also.

I agree.

Let's not rush into this.

Remember, we live in a world where lawyers prowl, and they will sue you,
simply because your logo looks a little bit like theirs, or uses the same
colours as theirs, or makes people crap the same colour as their logo does.

Hobbit worked fine for years without a logo, as did Linux, and many other
products out there.

I am not saying we need to wait years before we come up with a logo, I just
don't believe we need to rush into this.

Sometimes, when something doesn't need to be done, it is important that it
isn't done.

I have these mad(/awful) ideas sometimes so I might as well air my
insanity

We have the red/amber/green traffic light colours for display

So some sort of traffic light logo with

X imposed on the red light - we don't want that

Y imposed on the amber light - we need to know why its amber

And MON with the O as the green light.

Someone with some artistic sensibilities could come up with the actual
look.

Right I'll crawl back under my stone now
