Personally I'd use mailx from the command line on the Hobbit server:

     mailx -s "this is a test" user-f252d49614cf@xymon.invalid

then type in some random junk, followed by a single dot on a line of its
own. Check your logs for the outgoing message - depending on the OS, that
could be /var/log/syslog, /var/adm/messages, /var/log/mail, etc. Check the
email server to see if it arrived.

 Hi All,

Does anybody know a way to test your ability to send mail externally? I
want to be able to verify we can send mail to an external email server.
Being able to check mail externally would be great also. Does anybody know
of a test or script to do this?

thanks
