Yes, if you check xymonserver.cfg you can see that the old variables are listed at the bottom for compatibility.

I have a mrtg config in my tasks.cfg but my mrtg graphs are no longer updating and they are not even logging any errors when I run it manully it works fine.

[mrtg]
        CMD env LANG=C /usr/bin/mrtg --lock-file $BBSERVERLOGS/mrtg.lock /usr/local/hobbit/server/ext/mrtg.cfg
        INTERVAL 5m
        LOGFILE $BBSERVERLOGS/mrtg.log
