What about cat /etc/fstab

Can you su as norquid and touch the above mentioned hobbit-holidays.cfg?

When you ran make install it was supposed to create that config file.  It
didn't.  My guess is that nordquid can't write to /bigdisk/*

Try  namei -mx /bigdisk/hobbit/logs

Selinux is not installed (unless it's there without my knowledge).  The file
does not exist in the location you gave me.  And, xymon was installed by
root, but configured to run as the nordquid user.

Is SELinux enabled?

What is the output of

namei -m /bigdisk/hobbit/server/etc/hobbit-holidays.cfg

and what user/group is your Hobbit/Xymon installed as?

Is there anything in the log files that Hobbit generates? They are generally
in /var/log/hobbit.
