Issue with 4.2 client on Solaris 8

I am running the 4.2 client as a pkg install on several solaris 8
servers

I cannot get the files, msgs, ports or procs to work.  They are white.
The client log has this:   " Failed to get a message, terminating"
every 5 minutes

I compiled the client source on a solaris 8 server (it's not working
there either) and created a solaris pkg to install on the other servers

The client pkg works fine on the solaris 10.
