.default. not working?

Using testip was the whole point, because I wanted to apply that tag to a bunch of hosts. 
I decided to add tags to host entries instead. 
I do not use FQDN, and wondered if that might have something to do with testip.

Have you tried changing testip to noconn so that it does not try to resolve the IP address?   The example in hosts.cfg does not use a testip.

(note - there are TABS on both sides of .default. - in case that makes a difference)
