Has anyone tried running bind9 on the Hobbit box itself and having

I do, and it works very well. I'm using the caching-nameserver RPM
from Red Hat, so choose the appropriate version for your OS and use
it. You'll definitely see a reduction in DNS lookup times.
I'm surprised to hear that anyone *wouldn't* be running a local dns
server for any unix/linux box running services that require name
resolution. It's free, it's easy and speeds performance - a no brainer.
