MACHINEDOTS setting not working

I've got a client Ubuntu machine setup with the MACHINEDOTS setting in it's
cfg file but it's stats are getting ignored by the server.  The only way I
can get the stats to show up on the server side for this client is to add
the CLIENT:hostname setting in the server's hosts.cfg file.  Any idea why
the MACHINEDOTS way of doing it doesn't seem to work?
