Henrik, thanks for pointing me in the right direction. The permissions
looked right in the properties dialog box. I ran the commands anyway and
all just came back. I'm sure I hadn't changed them.

Like it says: Your ~hobbit/server/bin/hobbitping needs to be owned by
root, and with suid permissions.
chown root ~hobbit/server/bin/hobbitping
chmod u+s ~hobbit/server/bin/hobbitping
