Could you try the attached updated configure-script and Makefile's:
Save it to /tmp, then run

 cd hobbit-4.0-RC3
 tar zxf /tmp/makesfiles.tar.gz
 rm Makefile
 ./configure 
 make
 su -c "make install"

This adds the needed "-Wl,--rpath" options to the linker-command,
so it should be able to find the runtime shared libraries without
having to mess with LD_LIBRARY_PATH.

Let me know if this helps.

(This should work for all Linux- and *BSD systems).
